2009-11-06 - This is a very funny movie that probably will lose its humor over coming generations. In my generation (baby boomer) it is still hillarious. I hope you can enjoy it as much as we have over the years.

Marisa Tomei steals the show
2009-09-15 - I love this movie even better in BluRay. This is one of my favorite comedies. Joe Pesce is excellent in his role as a borderline lawyer in court to defend a family member (Ralph Macchio) and who has previously tried to avoid going into court. But I think the adorable Marisa Tomei completely steals the limelight here. Her court room performance is extremely funny, especially when she is showing off her automotive knowledge, but her best scene in my opinion is the rant about her "biological clock ticking". Lane Smith puts in another great performance as a bit of a "bumbler", but less of one than in his role as a senator in "Air America"

2009-08-06 - My rule used to be that if I have something in regular DVD, I do not replace it with Blu-ray. I first broke this rule with The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset (The Godfather / The Godfather Part II / The Godfather Part III) [Blu-ray] which makes a certain amount of sense because it was a restoration of two great classic modern films (forget Godfather III). That being said what am I doing buying the new Blu-ray of My Cousin Vinny? MCV is, after all, enjoyable, funny, and pretty far down on the top films of the century list.

This movie is like Godfather I and II only in the sense that it is a movie which we have all seen on small screens over and over again. As such I can't recall what it looked like the one time I saw a fresh print in a theater. Blu-ray solves this problem. And in the case of My Cousin Vinny there is a wealth of detail that has been previous obscured by broadcast television, VHS and even standard DVD. This movie was not filmed in Beecham County Alabama, but rather in the red clay surrounded town of Monticello Georgia. There are few parts of the world quite like Middle Georgia, and the Blu-ray brings it to life.

If you need some relief from Boston Legal, hire Vinny Bagadonuts. His courtroom style may be "unconventional" but he is "one heck of trial lawyer" as Judge Chamberlain Haller has attested.

2009-08-02 - I believe this to be one of those 90s comedies we all love, so the BD transfer was a nice addition to see come over. Playing it in the store today reminded everyone how fun the film was, but the obvious preservation work made for a nice sell on how these older films should be done.

The colors and clarity were actually cleaned up well, with the artifact being random to where there was no real detraction. The credit sequences looked solid, which for some of these 90s block letter credits the BD transfers can leave in horrible grain. With how they did Tomei's makeup in this, there could have been plenty of chances for a dull saturation look, but in actuality it turned out looking great.

The sound is what sold me though. They mixed and re-amplified it into a 5.1 DTS that rocked the channels. The train scenes were excellent and that owl made customers do a double take. The supplements suck though. They included a variety of trailers from theater and TV, but in that it does show how the original stock looked compared to this upgrade. The commentary was fine, but I was hoping for some visual treats. Instead, the film will have to stand alone for buying the Blu. The menu shows a cleaned up reel also and the navigation was simple. Enjoy.
