    Description of North & South:
North & South is a splendid, four-hour adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 19th century novel about an unlikely, and somewhat star-crossed, love between a middle-class young woman from England's cultivated south and an intemperate if misunderstood industrialist in a hardscrabble, northern city. Daniela Denby-Ashe plays Margaret Hale, forthright and strong-willed daughter of a former vicar (Tim Pigott-Smith) who relocates his family from a pastoral village outside London to unforgiving, largely illiterate Milton, a factory town where John Thornton (Richard Armitage) and his mother (Sinead Cusack), survivors of poverty, rule their cotton mill with an iron hand. Thornton befriends Margaret's father but incurs her wrath for his severity with his workers. What she doesn't notice is Thornton's core sense of responsibility for his employees' welfare. On the other hand, he misinterprets some of Margaret's own actions and intentions. Equally stubborn, the two drag out their obvious attraction over many painful months and events.

North & South's two leads are both very good, though Armitage's brooding, penetrating performance may very well be considered a classic one day. There are other wonders in the cast: Cusack and Pigott-Smith are superb, and Brendan Coyle is memorable as a firebrand union organizer who ultimately becomes an ally to a softening Thornton. The miniseries script by Sandy Welch is a persuasive mix of historical context and character study. Brian Percival's direction is full of moments that linger in the imagination, such as the winter-dream look of a busy cotton mill, with thousands of snowy fibers floating in the air. --Tom Keogh

    North & South Reviews:
Great adaptation - love this movie 5 Star Review
2008-09-05 - Great adaptation of a classic novel. While the movie added some scenes that werent in the novel, it kept the essence - enjoyed the last scene very much! I didnt think of Margaret quite as she was pictured but overall well done. Richard Armitage is so brooding in the role and has a voice that melts hearts - a perfect fit for this part. Casting, locations, scenes - all so entertaining and kept my attention.

    Terrific buy! 5 Star Review
2008-09-04 - This movie not only was shipped to me in a timely manner, but the copy was superb. I first rented this movie on netflix, but after I saw it I just had to buy it! A wonderful love story, and a must buy if you are a fan of English romance novels! Enjoy!

Can't PRAISE this enough! 5 Star Review
2008-09-03 - Short story: This is an awesome period drama. If you like Pride and Prejudice it is almost a certainty that you will love this movie.

Richard Armitrage as John Thornton is now first in my affections and Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy is 2nd.

It took me a little time to adjust to a couple of the accents. Especially that of Mrs. Thornton. There are one or two spots where clips of a scene are re-used. But overall, this is one of the absolute best adaptations of a novel ever done.

And you should try Wives and Daughters too.

How can I bypass the commercials??! 5 Star Review
2008-09-02 - This is a SUPERLATIVE film. Love everything about it!! But, on both discs, there are BBC commercials that I cannot forward through or push the menu button to go to the film. If you pause for a break, you have to go through these commercials again. Any ideas?

Mr. Thorton to die for... 5 Star Review
2008-08-22 - What can you say about a movie that touches on every aspect of life..I was sad when it was over there was so much more I wanted to know.. This is a great movie and book for anyone who loves these period pieces.. Richard Armitage isn't bad to look at either. I think we need to keep an eye out for him, great actor..you can check him out in the Vicar of Dibley and Robin Hood..but you can't beat him as Mr.Thorton..
