Editorial Review:
From listening to his grandmother recite epic poems from memory to curling up in bed while his father read funny verses, award-winning actor John Lithgow grew up with poetry. Ever since, John has been an enthusiastic seeker of poetic experience, whether reading, reciting, or listening to great poems.

The wide variety of carefully selected poems in this book provides the perfect introduction to appeal to readers new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Dylan Thomas are just a few names among Lithgow's comprehensive list of poetry masters. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud." This unique package provides a multimedia poetry experience with a bonus MP3 CD of revelatory poetry readings by John and the familiar voices of such notable performers as Eileen Atkins, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Billy Connolly, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Lynn Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Gary Sinise, and Sam Waterston.

Every reader will enjoy reciting or listening to these poems with the entire family, appreciating how each one comes to life through the spoken word in this superlative poetry collection.

The Poets' Corner: The One-and-Only Poetry Book for the Whole Family Reviews:
6 CD Set 2 Star Review
2009-12-02 - I loved the Book and CD combination so much that I bought the unadbridged CD set. Just opened the package and see that the discs don't have a index. I printed the index from another site but find that not having an easy reference on either the discs or in a pamplet a major unexpected shortcoming.

Lovely! 4 Star Review
2009-10-27 - The perfect gift for someone new to poetry! And it's great to hear some of your favorite poems read aloud! A real pleasure!

2009-10-14 - Great book. Awesome price (got it for $11). Too bad he did not expand by explaining more about each poem (like a high school text would.

Excellent collection for the whole family - especially the unwilling! 5 Star Review
2009-09-12 - I write poetry and creative non-fiction. I borrowed this book at the library and liked it so much I decided to buy off Amazon for my reference. If any of you know John Lithgow's work, you'll know that not only is he a wonderful actor, but he plays guitar and sings children's songs, write's children's books and has a wonderful sense of humour (parden my Canadian spelling). This book is great because he does a small history on the poet and his/her motivations and breaks it down into interesting facts and personable anecdotes. At the end of the history there is always a quote from the poet, and a noting of Lithgow's favourites for further reading outside the book. He then gives a wonderful example of the poet's work. One of the great things about the book is that under the poet's name it notes the type of poetry each individual poet was unique for (and in some instances, invented). For instance Lewis Carroll is "The Storyteller", John Donne "The Metaphysical Poet" and Ezra Pound "The Imagist". It is really helpful if you are studying poetry and trying to remember what style that poet wrote in. Another wonderful addition to the book is an MP3 CD of him and other famous vocal readers (Jodie Foster, Gary Sinise). You can sit with your children before bedtime and listen to some of these readings and enjoy. I personally love to read poetry to my children, they are wide-eyed and listen in wonderment to the words, images upon images popping into their young imaginations as I read. Exposing children (and other family members - especially the unwilling!) will really help their sense of timing and rhythm when writing and speaking, increase their vocabulary and give them that creative spirit that we all need to nurture. Thank you John, for introducing me to E.E. Cummings, all I can say is "WOW"! Highly, highly recommended.

Great for sharing poems with the family. 5 Star Review
2009-07-16 - A wonderfull variety of classics. Great way to expose your family on car trips. A purchase I'm glad I made.
