Description of In Spite of Ourselves:
You've got to hand it to John Prine. On the first song on this collection of duets, he plunges valiantly into "(We're Not) The Jet Set," singing the part made famous by George Jones, the Caruso of country music. And Prine, never blessed with the most pliant pipes, promptly pancakes a note flatter than Kansas. Aw, heck! The songwriter's songwriter takes a curious turn with his first studio album since 1995's Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings. Here he's penned only the hysterically coarse title track, opting instead to coo a slew of classic lovin'-and-losin' country tunes with Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Connie Smith, Trisha Yearwood, Melba Montgomery, Patty Loveless, Fiona Prine, and Dolores Keane. Given Prine's ragged-but-right voice, the effect is something akin to casting a grizzled character actor opposite Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story. And you know what? It'd probably still be a charming (albeit very different) movie, because romantic comedies, like country duets, are all about chemistry, which is something In Spite of Ourselves has in excess. --Steven Stolder
In Spite of Ourselves Reviews:
Who's John Prine?
2009-12-16 - OK, OK - honestly. I had never heard of John Prine. I am an old school rocker who has less than dabbled in country. With my Pandora subscription, however, I have exposed myself to so much great music the last two years and my taste is slowly changing. (If I was rating Pandora here it would also be 5 stars.) The title song played a couple of times on My Johnny Cash radio station I created. The first time I heard it, I laughed out loud because I thought the lyrics were hilarious. I sat at my desk and listened to the whole song from start to finish. I gave it a thumbs up and then it began to come up more and more often, and I found myself really enjoying the music. So - I opened up a new tab, headed over to Amazon and bought it. When it came in the mail (in less than a week with free super saver shipping), my wife and kids immediately made fun of me, BUT - and this is a big BUT - it is now everyone's favorite CD. I have owned it for several months now and we must have listened to this thing over 300 times. Every time we get in the car, someone wants to hear a particular song. And the more we have listened to it, the more we have connected to it. It is a beautiful CD with some really catchy songs that are alot of fun to sing along to. This is one of the best CD's that I have bought in years.
John at his best
2009-03-23 - This album is everything i expected it would be. As i said John at his best
John Prine Country
2009-01-30 - I have reviewed some of John Prine's work elsewhere in this space. Here Brother Prine holds forth in duets covering mostly modern country music classics (or ones that he just likes) with a who's who of women vocalists. So what is not to like about this CD. Nothing, especially if your tastes run to the country music genre. Although mine do not as a rule I note that my "Arky Angel" Iris DeMent is one of the women vocalists here on several songs ("The Jet Set", `Let's Invite Them Over", "We Could", and the title song "In Spite Of Ourselves"). I have mentioned elsewhere that I would walk many a mile... No, I would drag myself through many a desert to hear that voice. As for the rest I notice that Lucinda Williams does a very nice duet on "Wedding Bells" and Emmy Lou Harris (as always) on "I Know One". As for the rest I am not familiar with their work. However, given what I have already recommended this is a good CD.
The best
2008-08-01 - How could you go wrong? I mean an exmailman from Chicago. I bet he has seen it all! It comes across in his music.
Crosses generations
2008-06-17 - Fantastic collection of old songs performed with music legends. My mother enjoyed listening to this CD with me. She was delighted to hear some of the old songs she grew up with, performed by many of the singers she use to listen to on the radio. That young John fellow sang pretty good too.
