The Shepherd of the Hills Reviews:
The Shepherd of the Hills 5 Star Review
2009-08-29 - This book came in great condition and quickly. I enjoyed it very much.
I heard of "the shepherd" while visiting Branson MO. I am so glad I purchased
it and had a chance to read this wonderful story after visiting the area.
I highly recommend it.

The Shepherd will draw you into the Ozarks and you will discover why this stranger becomes know as the Shepherd 5 Star Review
2009-08-09 - This book is recommended reading for High School and above by a homeschool consultant. I thoroughly enjoyed the Shepherd, Sammy and Young Matt as I was drawn into the beauty, majesty and escape of the Ozarks. Some have defined the people as "simple" where I found them portrayed as deep, complex and honest people who live by the Ozark creed.

Read this yourself or offer it to your High School student. It's a keeper for our library.

One heck of a story 5 Star Review
2009-06-21 - The first time I read this book was on a New Year's Eve spent at my grandparents' house. I was probably around 10 or 11 years old. I didn't want to go to sleep & I had always seen this book sitting on my grandpa's desk, so I decided to give it a try.

I will admit that I didn't understand a lot of what was going on, that first time, because much of the language is of the Ozark Mountain dialect. I still thought it was an exciting & sweet story. After my grandpa passed away, my Grandma asked me if there was anything of his that I wanted. I asked for this book.

I've since read it several more times & have come to understand it much better. The story is a simple one about a community of simple people living in the Ozarks of Missouri. It has some very suspenseful scenes mixed in with tender & heartwarming moments. This book is laden with messages about what it means to be a good human being that almost anyone should be able to appreciate.

A Great Part Of My Reading History 5 Star Review
2009-01-09 - As a child of the show me state, in the area in which this book is set, this was a must read for schools, and I am so happy it was. A great tale and a since of history that is felt by those who have lived in any hill country.

An Old Gem 4 Star Review
2008-12-27 - My only knowledge of this book prior to reading it was that Branson, MO hosts an outdoor drama of this story. Since reading it and doing some research I learned that the author was the best selling author of the first quarter of the 20th century. Published in 1907 The Shepherd of the Hills is one of his most well known books. Set in the Ozarks where Wright lived for some years, the plot begins with an educated man visiting the area for unknown reasons. Quickly one learns that there is some mystery involved. Memorable characters come alive as the contrast between rural and urban cultures are explored. Using the visiting stranger as one who settles among the people, the author leads the reader to understand that developing integrity is the greater good rather than the typical successful urban stereotype. The book includes intertwined families, attempted hangings, romance, fights, revenue men, ghosts and secrets discovered. The physical landscape of the Ozarks is another character as it plays a part in the conflicts and resolutions. I was drawn into the story, getting a vivid image of the Ozarks at the time of the writing. I would recommend the book, especially to those interested in applied Christianity. While the author was not critically acclaimed by academia, he certainly was successful in communicating with the common people for whom buying books were still rare. The book needs to be considered by the time period of its writing, rather than current criticism. The author's life is as interesting as his book.
