Description of John Denver - Montana Christmas Skies:
Christmas specials with John Denver have been a favorite holiday tradition with families for years. This 47-minute, 1991 CBS television special finds John Denver joined by friends Clint Black, Katy Mattea, and Patty Loveless on Montana's Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Images of Denver on horseback, traversing the wide open plains and herding and roping cattle are interspersed with more intimate looks at Denver, Mattea, Black, Loveless, and other friends gathered for an old-fashioned sing-along in a rustic barn. The interaction between singers is warm and personal and lends a feeling of holiday warmth to powerful songs like "Christmas for Cowboys," "Christ Child's Lullaby," and "Someday Soon." The second half of the special offers a glimpse of Native American traditions, especially focusing on the children of the Fort Belknap Reservation, along with a live concert performance and additional performances in the barn. A children's choir joins Denver in concert versions of fun Christmas songs like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells." Especially moving is Denver's delivery of the ballad "I Want to Live." Denver's ruminations about the changing demographics of the American family and his insights into friendships new and old, the beautiful plains of Montana, and his plea to reach out to others strike a sentimental chord and provide a Christmas message worth pondering through the years. --Tami Horiuchi
John Denver - Montana Christmas Skies Reviews:
A Family Fave and Close To My Heart.
2008-11-18 - Since this was filmed on the Ft Belknap Reservation, it has many happy memories attached to it. My family farm wasn't too far away from the filming location. So it's nice to watch this with my parents. Even the gym where John played in...that was the very same HS that my Dad graduated in. So the old west feel is very much there when I see this. It's just worth every dime you invest in it. I also love the campfire and cabin atmosphere, because that is what some Christmas settings are like in Montana. However, the lack of snow while filming is a bummer. This is well worth owning if you cherish western values or just want to have some good old fun. Clint, Patty, and Kathy added a nice touch as well. Rest in peace John, thanks for the memories here!!!
John Denver at his best
2005-12-20 - John Denver loved Christmas! And it really shows on this DVD. I have a tradition of watching this every year, and I never tire of it. The songs are beautiful, the scenery gorgeous, and it's fun seeing John singing along with some wonderful country singers in a barn. The barn atmosphere brings a real intimacy to the entire experience. Some highlights for me are "Christmas for Cowboys", "Someday Soon", " A Change in the Air", and the Scottish lullaby that Kathy Mattea sings, while rocking a tiny infant. That song never fails to bring a tear to my eye!
If you love John Denver, or even if you don't, I highly recommend this Christmas DVD. I think it will become a family tradition to watch it every year in your home too!

A Wonderful Christmas Tradition
2004-12-11 - I found this DVD in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. Not being a particular John Denver fan (I like some of his stuff, but for the most part I can take it or leave it) I decided to take a chance.
I was very pleasantly surprised. JD, Clint Black, Kathy Mattea, and Patty Loveless jammin' in the barn is the best! Personal highlights for me are Clint Black's "Till Santa's Gone", Kathy Mattea's "Christ Child Lullaby", and Patty Loveless & Kathy Mattea do a great duet of "Someday Soon".
There are other highlights too like the JD classic "Grandma's Feather Bed", John singing "Rudolph" and "Away In A Manger" with a group of kids, and the bittersweet emotions evoked by John singing "I want to Live". Although I'm not a number one fan, the world is a much sadder place without him.
If you're thinking twice about purchasing this video, think no more. It's a wise purchase that you'll enjoy for years to come. I know I have.
A Christmas Legacy
2004-01-05 - I am thankful that John Denver was a contemporary of mine. He has inspired and motivated me during most of my adult life. Only John Denver could have given us Montana Christmas Skies. I cherish its beauty, its warmth, and its message. John Denver's music is a Christmas staple at our house, and this DVD, along with John Denver's legacy, will continue to touch my heart and spirit in the years to come. I recommend John Denver's music in general, and Montana Christmas Skies in particular, as nourishment for the soul.
