Editorial Review: Johnny Cash, nick-named "The man in black", was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. Johnny Cash was born February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas. He made his first single, "Hey Porter", for Sun Records in 1955. In 1958 he moved to Columbia Records.Cash used country and gospel influences in what was called rockabilly, an early form of rock 'n' roll. Hits from his Sun period "Hey Porter", "Cry cry cry", were released in 1955 and met with reasonable success on the country hit parade. Cash's next record, "Folsom Prison Blues", made the country Top 5, and "I walk the line" became No. 1 on the country charts and entered the pop charts Top 20 followed by "Home of the blues" which was recorded recorded in July 1957. That same year Cash became the first Sun artist to release a long-play album. |
