Editorial Review:
June Carter Cash is a country music blueblood through and through. As daughter of Maybelle Carter, a member of the pioneering Carter Family, her pedigree was well established; as wife and musical partner of Johnny Cash, her stature in country music lore was confirmed. However, with 1999's glorious Press On, her first solo effort in more than 25 years, she has made her own stellar contribution to the genre, one that sits comfortably alongside the work of her "aristocratic" company. Supported by warm and delicate acoustic strumming (from her own Autoharp as well as from Norman Blake and Marty Stuart among others), Cash proves herself to be an insightful and appealing songwriter capable of reconciling traditional themes with an acute awareness of modern times. One moment she sings of angels, family, and mortality, the next she blasts New York and Quentin Tarantino. Toss in a charming remake of her own composition "Ring of Fire," a powerful gospel duet with husband Johnny, and three Carter Family favorites, and the result is a lovely and expressive record that lives up to the promise of her esteemed names. --Marc Greilsamer
Press On Reviews:
1st solo effort in 25 years (1999)
2009-06-27 - PRESS ON..is a wonderful music CD.
June has John Carter Cash (her son), Rodney Crowell
& Marty Stuart (former son-in-laws), Norman Blake and
Rosie Carter Adams (her daughter) on here with her.
Johnny sang on one song.
It was recorded in a log cabin on their TN property.
Some are songs she wrote about her life. There
is a song about Elvis and a diner she used to eat at in
New York City.
Also on there is my favorite..WILL THE CIRCLE BE
UNBROKEN.
I LOVE IT! I think you will too.
JUNE CARTER 6/23/29---5/15/03
daughter ROSIE CARTER ADAMS 7/13/58---10/24/03
JOHNNY CASH 2/26/32---9/12/03
Less is more
2007-08-06 - I searched for this CD after hearing on the radio a recording of Mrs. Cash singing BURNING RING OF FIRE. She was accompanied by only a zither. The other cuts are just as delightful. They are lovely folk songs, old and new, accompanied by simple American insturments.
June Carter's Press On Album
2007-01-10 - I am a great fan of John and June Cash. Love this album of hers and wish she had been able to record earlier in her life. However, she put first things first with her family and I can even feel the love between her and her daughter Rosie and fellow recorders, especially, Marty Stuart. Her voice has changed but so have we all as we age/mature! Love the East of Jordan song she duets with John and the Gatsby song. Her sense of humor is immense and I believe that and her faith is what sustained their family all these years. God Bless June Carter Cash.
5 stars, now and forver!!!: June Carter Cash
2006-08-29 - I don't really listen to this album, since mine is signed, but the one time I listened to it and downloaded the songs onto my iPod, I was in love. June has again down over the maximum. A 5 star singer, Press On is her second to last album.
There are some really great songs that I really like on this album. One of my very favorites is the gospel classic "Meeting in the Air." It's fantastic and it gets me dancing every time. I even played it for my friend Madison Aumiller one time, and she started dancing as well! What can I say, if you listen to this song, you better find some dancin' medicin', cause this song is contagious!!
Another great song is the classic Carter Family Hit,"Can the Circle be Unbroken." June sings it beautifully and it sounds great.
Another classic is "Diamonds in the Rough." June recorded this song with Earl Scruggs, an old friend. It's a really good song that's perfect for just settling down in your cozy house on a warm winter night.
Don't forget the song "Tiffany Anastacia Lowe." You can tell June is havin' a grand ole time singin' this song fellers, 'cause she's laughin' right in the middle of it! It makes me laugh and smile to see the joy she haves recording.
There are also the songs I used to be somebody, and wings of Angels. These are very good songs too, and they really touch your heart when you need it.
Now that you know more about the CD, you should buy one, because the pictures in the pocket are great, the music is great,a nd the singing is great. And if you like this one, check out my other eviews for Keep on the Sunny Side: Her Life in music, Wildwood Flower, and Lousiana Hayride. You might like those albums as well. I sure do!! What can I say June Carter Cash is a ***** singer!!
June
definitely an acquired taste, but beautiful
2005-12-05 - I was never an admirer of June Carter (or the Carter family for that matter) but with maturity I have come to appreciate the beauty in her singing. Her voice is certainly not pretty, but the emotion expressed in it is so moving. The version on this album of The Far Side Banks of Jordan, sung with her late husband Johnny Cash, is THE definitive version of this song. I have loved the song since the first time I heard it, and several versions are great. This one, though, with their aging voices (and the love still shining through) is incredibly beautiful. Knowing that Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash had one of the world's true great love stories and knowing that he followed her to heaven after four short months, make this version unbeatable. I never hear it without being moved to tears!
