Super Hits Reviews:
Short Crash Course on Cash
2009-05-14 - Just a short sampler of Johnny Cash's hits, but includes "Understand Your Man" which is often missing from other collections.
Great Cash CD
2006-03-14 - Johnny Cash left a musical legacy that spanned forty years, from the fifties to the nineties. Many people are now just being introduced to The Man in Black and his music because of the film "Walk the Line." This CD collection is a great way for someone to hear a sampling of some of his earlier hits from the fifties and sixties, and one from 1970, "Sunday Morning Coming Down," which he first performed on the Johnny Cash show. Cash angered network executives by refusing to take out the words "Lord, I wish that I was stoned."
The ten tracks on this album are well selected, and are a variety of slow and fast songs with all sorts of different themes. My favorite songs are Sunday Morning' Comin' Donw, Folsom Prison Blues, Understand Your Man,and A Boy Named Sue.
I also highly recommend Cash's autobiography. Cash tells his own story like no one else could.
Super
2005-12-29 - I got this CD for Christmas. Was kind of pissed, because I like Johnny Cash but can name 500 other musicians I like better. But this CD is not that bad. It's only about 30 minutes, but every song on it is good and you can get it at Wal-Mart for like 5 bucks. So, check it out:
1. Ring of Fire-5/5-One of my favorite Johnny Cash songs. Written by June Carter Cash.
2. Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down-5/5-Written by Kris Kristofferson and apparently done live, it's very good and it's interesting to hear Johnny Cash talk about how he wished he was stoned.
3. I Walk the Line-5/5-A very cool love song...It's a perfect name for the movie.
4. Folsom Prison Blues-5/5-"I shot a man in reno just to watch him die."
5. Understand Your Man-4/5-Pretty good, too short though.
6. Big River-5/5-(No Comment)
7. I Still Miss Someone-5/5-Really sentimental lyrics.
8. Jackson-5/5-Featuring June Carter, this song is really good. Inspires a great scene in the movie too.
9. A Boy Named Sue-5/5-This song is f**king hilarious. The lyrics were written by child's poet Shel Silverstein.
10. One Piece at a Time-5/5-This song is about a man who steals a beautiful car from the factory one piece at a time. It's a great song, very funny and well written.
A
Very poorly done.
2004-12-07 - Very bad mix on at least one song.
I head the song "I Walk The Line" from this compilation and was amazed. It is very badly mixed. I own the columbia records compilation "Johnny Cash's Greatest Hits Volume 1" and the mix is very different even though it is obviously from the same recording session. The bass beat is significantly slower but the voice is only a bit slower. They make up for this by cutting out base notes every now and then. It make for a confused feel and does Cash a real disservice. The "Super Hits" people must have some weird idea of what sound they want.
If you want to enjoy the music stay with a distributer with some musical morals.
A basic collection at a budget price
2003-09-30 - This collection contains ten of Johnny's finest songs from the first half of his career. The most recent recording here, One piece at a time (from 1976), is a very funny song about stealing car parts from a factory over several years and assembling them at home with embarrassing results. Jackson is a brilliant duet with his wife, June Carter Cash, which was also recorded by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. I still miss someone is a wonderful love song and has been covered by a variety of other singers. Other classic songs here include Ring of fire, I walk the line and A boy named Sue.
Johnny Cash is a legend and many compilations of his music have been released. Obviously, anybody who is a fan and can afford it will buy a more expensive collection containing all these songs together with many more that you will not find here.
This collection is designed for those fans who have a limited budget, or for people who want just a little of Johnny's music to listen to occasionally.
