Description of The Essential Johnny Cash:
It's a great and perhaps impossible challenge to encapsulate the highlights of Johnny Cash's vast musical catalog in a two-CD, 36-song collection like this. Yet, though it barely scratches the surface, 2002's The Essential Johnny Cash--part of a series of compilations and reissues celebrating Cash's 70th birthday--does present three-dozen satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels. Above all else, these 36 selections are wonderful reminders of Cash's rustic eclecticism. Cuts range from '50s Sun rockabilly classics like "Hey Porter" and "I Walk the Line" to '60s country-folk gems like "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and Cash's memorable duet with Bob Dylan on Dylan's "Girl from the North Country." Also included are more recent samplings of Cash's celebrated collaborations, including "Highwayman," which he recorded in 1984 with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson as part of the on-again, off-again supergroup the Highwaymen, and "The Wanderer," a fervent gospel collaboration with U2 that appeared on the band's 1993 album, Zooropa. --Bob Allen
The Essential Johnny Cash Reviews:
Great Collection
2009-09-06 - Great collection of his music! It has almost all of the songs that were in the movie.
If you like Johnny Cash, you will love this CD!
2009-08-02 - Really, I need not say more than the title--it says it all! I first read about this CD a few short weeks ago in an online article which suggested playing this CD if you were giving a garage sale, as it was 'oldie but goodie' Johnny Cash songs! I got on amazon.com right away and ordered it.
Great CDs
2009-07-30 - Johnny Cash's country music legacy is hard to capture on two CDs, but these contain his greatest hits. The two CDs are great clean country music at its finest.
So it doesn't have the newer stuff so WHAT!?!?
2009-07-04 - This is the real Johnny Cash. The Man at his roots was one of the greatest story tellers through music that the worlds ever known. From the live Folsom Prison Blues recording INSIDE OF A PRISON, to A Boy Named Sue, these songs bring it all back. Even with that there are a couple notable tracks from the early to mid days that are MIA, but the newer over hyped Covers of 90's hits are a welcome omission for me.
Back when country was good...
2009-05-12 - I can't stand today's country at all! Everything on the radio is repetitive with lyrics written by a redneck 10 year old and the singing is ear-cringing and with an exaggerated Southern drawl. But back in the day, country was The Man and Black, who had some pretty deep lyrics and a booming, deep voice.
The collection itself has a lot of variety, from some of his early stuff to some gospel to some newer stuff, including a U2 song he did. The reason why I don't give this product 5 stars is because of the unnecessary censorship in 'A Boy Named Sue." The line 'I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you Sue' is 'I'm the (BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP) that named you Sue.' Very annoying, indeed.
But despite that, Johnny Cash is worth checking out, even if you don't like country,
