Editorial Review:
The first four songs on Unchained come from the songbooks of Beck, Don Gibson, Soundgarden, and Jimmie Rodgers. What might look like absurdly unsupportable eclecticism in other artists, of course, is pretty much standard stuff for Cash. Unchained is hardly standard, though; it's more like the best album he's made since his 1984 departure from Columbia Records. Not only is this a stack of songs perfectly and idiosyncratically suited to the man, they're given door-rattling backing treatment by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who prove as fitting for Cash's music as his own Tennessee Two was back in the day. --Rickey Wright

Unchained Reviews:
Johnny Cash at His Best 5 Star Review
2002-12-21 - Until I heard Johnny Cash I couldn't stand country music. Johnny Cash has not completley changed my opinions on Country music in general. He is the greatest while most of the other modern country music is painful to listen to. Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson are the only other country singers who matter besides Cash.

With this album, the second in the amazing American recordings, Johnny Cash is at the height of his late-in-life popularity. The Previous American Recording was amazing but it lacked the scope and versatility of "Unchained." The last two American recodings "Solitary Man" and "The Man Comes Around" are amazing in their own rights. These other albums, at times, seem like re-hashes of the material presented herein. This is a perfect record and I think his best.

I am a 20 year old heavy metal fan but I can't stop listening to Johnny Cash and especially this album. The type of energy that Cash gives off with his one-of-a-kind voice is astonishing. He has such a strong presence on this recording with a seemingly limited vocal range and a straight-forward lyrical approach. He is one of the most talented singer/songwriters of all time.

I have bought his prison albums as well as all of the other American recordings. This is by far the best. Country should be proud/ashamed of Johnny Cash. A man who was around and extemely influential at the birth or Rock N Roll and Country is still putting out the best music the genre has ever seen. Country music would be absolutely nothing without Johnny Cash. "Unchained" is the most palpable example of Cash's genius and his range of influence. You can't beat two originals, "Mean Eyed Cat" and "Meet Me In Heaven" with a wide variety of covers that are re-interpreted by a legendary music prophet. Listen to Johnny Cash!!!

Unlimited "Cash"! 5 Star Review
2002-10-03 - This is the second offering of three to date from the collaboration of Rick Rubin and Johnny Cash for American Records. This set brings back Johnny Cash doing ...Johnny Cash!Cash had fell into an artistic decline that could be traced back to the late 1970's and by the early nineties had been dropped by his long time label,Columbia. Enter Rick Rubin and the first American Recordings release which allowed the "dark" side of Cash to come out. "Unchained" gives us a throwback album to the glory days of the house of Cash. For all those who "discovered" Johnny due to the "dark" set, this set was probably a revelation of sorts, for those of us who have grew up with the man, this is old hat, but, gee,it is GREAT old hat,and very refreshing to hear that rumbling bass again!!This set reminds me of the musical format of Johnny's old tv show, one or two of his tunes, several spirtuals,a couple of his contemporaries covered, and a great ending (usually his own I Walk the Line). This set offers some great readings, most notably on the cut"Rusty Cage","Rowboat","Will You Meet Me in Heaven",and "Sea of Heartbreak". This entire piece flows together nicely, its a swwweeettt ride!Go get it .

You Gotta Get This ! 5 Star Review
2001-06-21 - Pretty amazing to me that "American Recordings" and "American III" is so popular with tons of reviews and this doesn't have one.

If you liked the previous 2 mentioned.....you gotta get this one.

This man is a living legend and he again sings some of the best songs ever written and naturally makes them better....Just buy it !

Fabulous 5 Star Review
1998-12-17 - The 65 year old Cash does it again with his latest album full of cover-me-nots and original soon to be classics. Amazing covers of Tom Petty's Southern Accents, along with Beck's Rowboat (gotta love Cash singing "give me some alcohol") and even Soundgarden's Rusty Cage all show that Cash knows no bounds as far as music is considered. Who's next for Cash, Puff Daddy? (let's hope not) Still, the cover songs on this album are a treat. As are the ballads Meet Me In Heaven and the title cut, Unchained. All in all this is a must have not just for country music or Johnny Cash fans, but for all appreciators of great music.

J. C. at his best! 5 Star Review
1998-05-27 - I didn't like countrymusic at all, but now I do
