Unchained Reviews:
A Great Series of Recordings 5 Star Review
2009-08-28 - After hearing so many people gush about the Johnny Cash /Rick Rubin American series for several years, I finally got around to giving them a listen. I started with the first one "American Recordings". The first listen was a wow moment. A few weeks later I bought the next three "Unchained", "American III: Solitary Man" and American IV: The Man Comes Around". I had a long day of data entry to do so I ended up listening to these three CDs in one sitting on head phones. Amazingly I did not get bored with them and the time just flew by.

They did everything right on this series, from song selection to what seamed like the unerring production on every track. Be it Johnny with one guitar or a full band it seamed like no mistakes were made. Cash's voice was starting fade a bit on American IV but I found it to be an apt conclusion to his story in music. All four CDs are worth having and I will get American V some time soon.

This is a very fitting swansong for Cash.

One of the best albums made in the nineties 5 Star Review
2009-07-10 - With tis album, Johnny Cash, established himself not only between the countylegends but also between the alternative legends. Was the early Johnny Cash a great rock 'n roll artist who became a living countrystar, together with the Rick Rubin produced American Recordings albums he proved the world to be one of the few.
Great album, will stand the test of time

Johnny Cash's best work 5 Star Review
2008-10-16 - This series is Johnny Cash's best work. A bit dark, maybe because he knew these were his last cd's. BUY THEM ALL.

The "American II" album 4 Star Review
2008-09-01 - Though lacking this monicker, "Unchained" was the second collaboration of Cash and Rick Rubin in the American series. Much different from "American Recordings," "Unchained" features musical accompaniment by the likes of Tom Petty and Flea (from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), and an overall more upbeat sound.

Folks have differing opinions on the reinterpretations of more modern tunes like Beck's "Rowboat" and Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage." Personally, they feel a little forced, but they're still decent efforts.

There are some great classic country tunes here, including an extended version of Cash's own "Mean Eyed Cat." And of course, there's "I've Been Everywhere"--infamously used (and abused) on a certain motel chain's ad campaign.

For those who bought "American IV" for the darker tunes like "Hurt" and "I Hung My Head," this album might not match your taste, but I would still recommend it if only to hear the other side of Cash.

The greatest artist of all times 5 Star Review
2007-12-20 - what ever lebel fired him are a bunch of idiots. John Cash was the greatest of all times. all of his albums produced by Rick Rubin are classics it's the best John Cash ever! do yourself a favor and try two or three.
