Walking The Line: The Legendary Sun Recordings (3CD) Reviews:
A Lot of Material for A Little Money, Worth Every Penny 5 Star Review
2009-11-19 - "Walking the Line," is a three-disk compilation of the early work, from 1955-58, for Sam Phillips' Memphis-based Sun Records, by the late country singer/songwriter Johnny Cash, one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. Mind you, Cash left Sun for Columbia in 1958, seeking greater artistic freedom; he wanted to record more widely; folk, gospel, etc., and many of his biggest hits, such as "John Henry," "Don't Take Your Gun to Town," and "Ring of Fire," were recorded for Columbia. This fact makes the album at hand a more likely purchase for the artist's most devoted country fans, although he did, to be sure, delve into rockabilly, and just plain rock and roll during his Sun years..

"I Walk the Line," his signature tune, is, of course, included. It was his fourth recording for Sun to break into the charts: it shot to Billboard's #1, staying on the charts for a stunning 43 weeks, eventually selling over two million copies. It retains its power to this day, showcasing his driving "chick-a-boom" guitar work and hustling band; his distinctive bass/baritone voice, and his dark outlook - he once said "the beast in me is caged by frail and fragile bars."

The album's also got the towering "Folsom Prison:" throughout his life, Cash was always particularly conscious of men in jail, once saying that "convicts are the best audience I ever played for." There's a story that Merle Haggard, another important country artist, once told Cash that every one of the three concerts Cash gave at California's San Quentin Prison was very important to him. Cash replied that he didn't remember Haggard's being in his band, to which Haggard said that he'd been incarcerated.

Cash had impeccable working class credentials. He was born to Arkansas white tenant farmers, one of seven children. During the Great Depression, his father was given land under a New Deal program, and, from the age of five, Cash picked cotton, or whatever else was growing, with his family. Many of these earlier songs reflect this background. He went to Detroit seeking work as a young man, in 1950, finding himself a job in an auto factory in Pontiac, Michigan. He enlisted in the Air Force. Upon his discharge in 1954, he married, and moved to Memphis to try to break into the music business. While he was trying, he worked a variety of jobs, including appliance salesman. He auditioned for Sun, and was rejected, but by 1955 he was recording there, and in 1956, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition by being invited to play the Grand Ole Opry.

In 1985 he organized The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. I was lucky enough to catch them once, in New York's Central Park, on an enchanted big blue sky spring evening I'm not likely ever to forget. No one else will ever have the chance, but we do have this album. It's a lot of material for a little money, and worth every penny.

Very good- Great find 5 Star Review
2009-10-27 - I too found this at Borders Books not long after Walk Line came out. As with all Cash compilation CD's there are some songs you will have two of if you have other greatest hits CD's eg. "Walk the Line", "Hey Porter" However there were a few that I don't have on any of my 25 other Johnny Cash albums such as "Mean Eyed Cat". It's a good album to get if you are starting to collect Johnny Cash's music in chronological order or just want a good collection of his early stuff. All in all a good Cd. However I got this for under $20 at Borders so you might want to check there first. Of course that was a while ago so I really don't know what it sells for now.

The Sun Days.. 5 Star Review
2008-06-09 - When I think of Johnny Cash, these Sun recordings always come to mind, Folsom Prison Blues,Big River,Give My Love To Rose,I Walk The Line..These are his best because it started with that distinctive chic-a-boom sound, the Johnny Cash, Tennessee two sound,Luther Perkins simple yet complex unique lead guitar,Marshall Grants slappin',thumpin',stand up bass.(by the way a stand up bass,is not easy to play.)along with that unique voice that projects and shatters walls down. Johnny Cash was unbelievable in concert, you think his voice booms on record,it thunders through a p.a. speaker,I'll never forget it. One reason I bought this three cd compilation was for the Sun album(Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams) - all of these songs are included on here. Imported from England, the audio could'nt have been remastered better, excellent, and the price is right on the money. One more note, this box set is short three or four songs of the complete Sun recordings, nothing significant. man, what a deal! Cash-the Sun days..

MUST HAVE!!! 5 Star Review
2007-12-14 - This is a great set for any Man in Black fan. Like always, the songs are simple and to the point. "Give My Love To Rose" chokes me up every time, and "There You Go" reminds me of my past (as should for any man). Besides the mainstream hits that the "Walk The Line" movie featured, this is Mr. Cash's beginnings and every fan should own it. You can't go wrong. This set is best heard with the sound turned up all the way and with some good Whiskey or an ice-cold six pack.... cheers!!!

UNBELIEVABLE VALUE AND SOUND QUALITY! 5 Star Review
2006-12-27 - I hesitantly purchased this 3 CD set, figuring the sound must be below average for the price, but I have to say, the quality is great! I still can't believe such an essential collection, packed with 54 tracks can be had for this price. This is a GREAT starting point for newcomers to the House of Cash. And die-hards will appreciate the inclusion of many songs that do NOT appear on the many, many "best of" collections credited to the Man In Black. Well worth every penny, and it won't take alot of pennies to purhase this bargain of a lifetime, so buy it NOW!
