  • Editorial Review:
This is the movie that Leonardo DiCaprio received an Oscar nomination for, five years before Titanic. And, in fact, this is the movie that should have made him a star, he's so good in it. Based on the novel by Peter Hedges (who adapted his own book) and directed by Lasse Hallström (My Life as a Dog), this is the funny, moody tale of a young man named Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) who lives at home in a small town with his 500-pound Momma (beautifully played by nonpro Darlene Cates), his mentally retarded younger brother Arnie (DiCaprio, utterly convincing), and his sisters. Not a lot happens--Arnie keeps climbing a water tower and getting stuck; Gilbert is involved with a married woman (Mary Steenburgen), then meets a nice new girl in town who's closer to his age (Juliette Lewis). And that's exactly what makes this movie so much more than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood product: it's not about some mechanical, formulaic plot; it's about these characters, and it allows you to spend some time with them and get to know them. Depp may have started out as a TV teen idol on 21 Jump Street, but his feature film choices since then--in such wonderfully offbeat and diverse movies as Cry-Baby, Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, Donnie Brasco--have made him one of the most interesting, unpredictable, and risk-taking young actors in American movies. --Jim Emerson

    What's Eating Gilbert Grape Reviews:
    Soo sweet 5 Star Review
2009-11-28 - I absolutely LOVE this movie. Johnny Depp and Leo DiCaprio are my favorite actors and seeing them both together in the same movie is awesome. Especially since they're both so young here. They're amazing actors. As for the story-line, I think this is a really sweet movie. It's very sad at the end, but sort of bittersweet. I recommend it to everyone. :]

Can't go wrong 4 Star Review
2009-11-10 - If you like Johnny Depp or Leanardo DeCaprio this is a must see from their early years. Also tells a story of a mothers love and the love returned, no matter what.

    Not bad 4 Star Review
2009-08-17 - First, I am happy for timed delivery.
Also I am satisfied for cheep price and good condition for the item.

    Remarkable Movie! 5 Star Review
2009-07-14 - I enjoyed this movie when I first saw it and love it even more after watching it several times. I was not a Leonardo DiCaprio fan before seeing this movie but after I saw this movie I became one. I thought that he did such a great job in this movie that I actually believed he was a mentally handicapped boy. Then you have Johnny Depp's character Gilbert that is just trying to hold his family together and doing his best at trying to watch out for his younger brother Arnie. This movie is one of those movies that just touches your heart and makes you think twice about little actions that people do in day to day life, you may end up walking away feeling a little different after this movie. Watch it and you will see.

    (Honorary) Oscar-Worthy 5 Star Review
2009-06-10 - This was an excellent movie, that was critically acclaimed, but the public didn't bother to really make it a blockbuster. It has excellent performances by all the cast. I Loved this film and brought it in for my class to see on a free day. It is a heart-filled drama, and a sanctuary from the high-budgeted films with poor actors we see so often today.
