Mind, Body & Soul Reviews:
Mind, body and hype 1 Star Review
2005-05-07 - Please don't let others fool you into thinking that Stone is rankable or even comparable with Aretha Franklin. She is far, far from it--as far from soul as Avril is to punk. She sounds like a black soul singer's parody of white girl trying to sing soul.

Her voice is far too forced, exagerated and to be quite frank, hysterical.

Stone needs to learn to use her voice properly.

Her voice is not soulful, and neither is it capable of handling high-notes or handling Mariah-style mannerisms (for the record, Mariah herself isn't really capable.)

Anastacia and Taylor Dane's voices are far, far superior, and even they didn't get half the credit and adoration that Joss got--despite being also white.

Hypothetically, had Joss been black, she wouldn't have gotten as far as she has, simply because her voice is NOT THAT OUTSTANDING.

I cannot believe that people have even mentioned Aretha and Stone in the same sentence. These people have to be either children, those who resent commercial music but still need the commercial feel, or those not capable of handling REAL soul.

I find it upsetting that real soul artists such as Angie Stone are being pushed into the background for Joss' brand of cartoon, satirical soul.

Great album, great talent 5 Star Review
2004-10-19 - I have read through all 46 of the American Amazon reviews on this album of Joss Stone. I found that most of the reviews were very (same same) but I can understand it.
Her voice is something different and not manufactured via some of the top of industry pop makers.
What we have to realise here, is that in the UK they don't have all the kiddie shows where if the kid shows a bit of talent then they get plastered all over the TV. To become a star in the USA is a lot harder if you are not from the country as the industry really only wants home grown talent so they have a say in what they do and how they act.
Yes she did win a talent competition when she was younger but in the UK that is all over in a day, people have forgotten who she was.
Yes she is white and Yes there are some anti white R&B comments out there but what should the colour of the skin matter when you are listening to the song and not just watching here because of the body.
Before video people went for the music because it sounded great and not because of the plastic body parts added. I am a lover of soul, blues, funk and boggy.
It has been hard to find modern singers with the talent and songs that you can just sit back and listen, then also to sit in a bar and have a bit of a dance with. But I would say that the mixture of both soul sessions and MB&S it has given me a great two hours of listening. The only thing I am afraid of with Ms Stone is if the America Industry manages to snare her and turn her around to a pop idol which will mean here carrier will end in about two years.
She is not trying to be a Diva, or a pop idol, she is in my opinion just a girl that loves the old 70's soul music and has copied her favourites until she got the feeling naturally in her voice. Which are what all kids do growing up, but now with MB&S she has expressed her voice through original songs and I feel has come out a winner. I really like (You had me) as it has the upbeat tempo, I know it isn't the favourite with most of the people but hey isn't it great that we all have different tastes. Also she needed an upbeat strong song to break into the charts as the first track released from her new album.
I would love to see here win some grammy awards but she has too much going against her.
1. She is white trying to break into the predominate black market
2. She is not an American
3. It is not the music for the younger generation. It is mostly older people who know and like the 70's music.
