Original Album Classics Reviews:
Robbo Channels Jim Dandy
2009-08-15 - This is worth the price used for the bonus tracks. Sin after Sin actually includes a cover or "Race with the Devil" by Jim Dandy / Black Oak Arkansas. Begining with soaring opera scream and then bam into that riff. It doesn't get any better than this. British Steel is as always a classic and Turbo is...well...hair metal.
Sands of Time
2009-03-30 - The 5-CD set spans nearly the entire recording career of the band, as it begins with the first album for Columbia Records - Sin After Sin (1977) and speeds to the 2005 release, Angel of Retribution, which marked the return of lead vocalist Rob Halford after a 12-year absence.
Sin After Sin was produced by Deep Purple's Roger Glover and is highlighted by a cover of Joan Baez's Diamonds & Rust, which remains a concert mainstay. The lineup - K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton (g), Halford (v), Ian Hill (b) - formed the solid nucleus, with up-and-coming drummer Simon Phillips demonstrating at age 19 that he had incredible artistic skills.
Dave Holland is the drummer for British Steel (1980), which contains a pair of signatute numbers - Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight - while cranking out hot riffs on The Rage and Steeler. Turbo (1986) was slated to be a double-album and features guitar synthesizers as the band attempted to merge its classic metal sound with the ongoing electronic studio revolution.
Scott Travis (d) and guest Don Airey (k) help pick up the pieces from the Turbo debacle (the remaining tracks for Twin Turbos appeared on Ram It Down [1988]) for a speed metal spectacular on Painkiller (1990). The band was in high gear, though he aftermath of a successful world tour found Halford leaving the group for a series of solo projects.
Angel of Retribution (2005) is a "comeback" for the band in may ways; Halford came back into the fold and the strong material - Judas Rising, Revolution, Demonizer, Lochness - found the album making a strong #13 debut on the Billboard album chart.
One of the most recognizable metal bands, the group has churned out an amazing catalog of mostly solid material for 40 years. This is a good overview of some of the biggest (and controversial) moments in JP's career.
