Description of Hazel - The Complete First Season:
Hooray for Hazel! Shirley Booth stars as the irrepressible housekeeper Hazel in the endearing family TV series that ran from 1961 to 1966. A brilliant character actress, Booth wisecracks her way through Hazel's life, solving the problems of her employers, the often-befuddled Baxter family, as well as of the community (busting a shoplifting ring, finding homes for stray dogs, exposing a group of financial swindlers). All this Hazel does with her cheerful working-class enthusiasm, without getting so much as a stray wrinkle in her crisply pressed maid uniform (complete with little head thingy). When she gets into her own scrapes, she shrugs them off with Brooklynese cracks like, "Looks like I'm in the soup again!" The show is a perfect snapshot of early 1960s America, complete with frozen-in-time décor (did everyone have that same print of the little-girl ballet dancer framed in their living room?) and a lovely leisurely pace. Hazel can make an entire episode out of one single premise, as when Mr. Baxter decides that an unlisted phone number might cut down on the number of crank phone calls. And who wouldn't be nostalgic for a time when middle-class households had a working dad, a mostly-stay-at-home mom, perfectly behaved kids--and live-in housekeepers? Part of the appeal of Hazel, though, is that it's clear her life is much broader than her occupation. She knows everyone in town, from the balloon guy at the local park to the most powerful judge on the bench--all of which eventually comes in handy. And did we mention she's a cham-peen league bowler? Booth won two well-deserved Emmys for her portrayal of Hazel. The boxed set includes all 35 25-minute episodes, and you won't want to miss a one. I'm talking to youse! --A.T. Hurley
Hazel - The Complete First Season Reviews:
REALLY CUTE,REALLY WHOLSOME SHOW.
2008-08-28 - I remember Hazel as a young boy and i don't remember being that crazy about it,would watch sometimes if nothiong else was on(with the title HAZEL it seemed like a girley show). So I took a chance when i buyhg this set off Amazon.I have tried "many" DVD shows sets from my youth that i used to like as a kid(some turned out to be enjoyable, some did not). Most of them pale in comparison to the Andy griffith sHow of which i am a BIG fan.So anyway to make a long story short,i was EXTREMELY SUPRISED and DELIGHTED to find out just how CUTE and WHOLESOME and FUNNY show the HAZEL SHOW is.I will definately be buying the second season as soon as its released(am signed up on AMAZON to be notified as soon as it does).
A Wonderful Family Experience
2008-08-12 - We've been watching 'Hazel' courtesy of Netflix the past few weeks and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I put the first DVD in on a rainy Sunday afternoon and it just hit the spot. Shirley Booth is so likeable in a 'maid-to-order' role. Clean humor, good stories, some enjoyable laughs wihtout anyone being made a fool of. A far cry from most of today's television comedies. My 8 year old daughter likes it so much she started her Christmas list the other week and this was at the top! Hazel is a doozy!!!
What are they doing to classic television shows?
2008-07-30 - Why are they doing their best to destroy the memory of classic television shows? Hazel is a classic and only one season has been offered for sale? It's just wrong! When I see the trash that the studios are releasing on DVD - and how they make sure they release the entire series, it just ticks me off.
We used to have Nick at Nite and TV Land to get a classic television fix, but when they turned on us and started airing modern junk, DVD's are all we have. I watch Hazel so often, I'm surprised I haven't worn out my DVD's yet!
I can't believe I'm the only person begging and pleading for additional seasons of so many of the classics. C'mon, we've been loyal for so many years, just give us some decent shows to watch on DVD!
More Hazel, PLEASE
2008-07-15 - We're begging you, PLEASE release more seasons of, "Hazel". Family television as it should be...
Hazel- The Complete First Season
2008-06-08 - My wife and I watched this show as kids (way back in the 1960's) and it is so great to have it available on DVD. We are now able to enjoy it again with
our daughter. She LOVES the shows. The old shows we grew up with are still the best. Today's stuff almost never is any good.
