Editorial Review:
A New Orleans law student finds herself embroiled in a terrifying web of intrigue extending to the highest levels of government after she writes a speculative legal brief exposing the activities of a powerful oil magnate.
Description of The Pelican Brief (Snap Case):
Another John Grisham legal thriller comes to the screen, pairing Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in a film directed by Alan J. Pakula, who is known for dark-hued suspense pictures such as Klute, The Parallax View, All the President's Men, and Presumed Innocent. The Pelican Brief isn't up to the level of those films, but it is a perfectly entertaining movie about a law student (Roberts) whose life is endangered when she discovers evidence of a conspiracy behind the killings of two Supreme Court justices. She enlists the help of an investigative reporter (Washington) and the two become fugitives. The charisma and chemistry of the leads goes a long way toward compensating for the story's shortcomings, as does a truly impressive supporting cast that includes Sam Shepard, John Heard, James B. Sikking, Tony Goldwyn, Stanley Tucci, Hume Cronyn, John Lithgow, William Atherton, and Robert Culp. --Jim Emerson
The Pelican Brief (Snap Case) Reviews:
Great Blu-ray!
2009-10-19 - Warner did a very good job on this older material. The picture is clear without any dirt or dropouts. Sharpness is on a very high level, especially the close-ups show every detail like a single hair or pore. One negative point is the lack of any bonus, but what the hell... at this price!
Put me to sleep.
2009-10-13 - Was I the only one bored to death? Love Denzel. Love Julia. Hate this snooze fest.
So this is what it looks like!
2009-10-04 - The Pelican Brief was released on DVD many years ago. The DVD was a bit muddy and flat, among many other faults. The new Blue-Ray is a good example of how a movie that is only so-so in quality can still be a very enjoyable view. The move to BRD didn't improve the movie, which is a mashup of All the Presidents Men and the George Bush administration. However, the presentation is very good with clear sound and clean video.
Price Change Merry-Go-Round
2009-09-20 - Review is not about the movie but Amazon. Five price changes in six days. Why stop there, how about hourly price changes on everything. You could chase more customers away which seems to be the Amazon business plan.
Extremely poor BLU-RAY transfer of excellent film!
2009-09-07 - Extremely poor blu-ray transfer of an excellent film.
Another WB blu-ray disappointment this week (Supernatural Season 4 was the first one for me).
Dull, lackluster quality video. This disc is one to avoid unfortunately.
