Julia Stiles (MONA LISA SMILE) and Academy Award(R) winner Shirley MacLaine (1983 Best Actress, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT) star in CAROLINA, the endearing romantic comedy about a young woman (Stiles) trying to escape the eccentric ways of her wacky Southern family and meet the man of her dreams -- a nice, normal available guy. Finding him appears easier said than done until she meets a handsome and debonair Englishman. Will Carolina's dream turn into a nightmare when she introduces her perfect guy to her less-than-perfect family? And what will her best friend Albert have to say? As funny and charming as SWEET HOME ALABAMA, this Southern belle is sure to sweep you off your ever-loving feet.

    Carolina Reviews:
Sense: This movie made none 2 Star Review
2009-11-10 - good grief- I don't even know where to begin.

I'm a fan of Julia Styles, and generally enjoy her movies. I like romantic comedies. I like goofy oddballs in films. I should have liked this movie- but no. No, no, and no.

Carolina's next door neighbor writes romance novels under a pen name- they are best friends blah blah blah. It's a romantic comedy, so you know where this is going, right? What they don't do is explain why they are just buddies- why had they never dated? no explanation.

The aunt who is a high class madam? why?

The dog that we've seen all of once running rampant on the Thanksgiving dinner table? Beats me.

do yourself a favor and do not watch this.

    Awful! 1 Star Review
2009-03-18 - Yikes!! Couldn't even finish this dud. One of the most boring movies I have seen. Didn't care about the characters, didn't like the story (if there was one) and definitely didn't like this movie!!!!

Don't waste your money or time.

IT'S BEEN DONE BEFORE, BUT SELDOM BETTER 4 Star Review
2009-02-25 - CAROLINA is a lovely movie about dysfunction, looking for sanity, searching for love, family ties, and other afflictions. Styles, and MacLaine are marvelous, as is the rest of the cast, and make up for a somewhat familiar, though still very likeable, story. If you enjoyed TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, this may be right up your alley. Good stuff.

    Funny movie 4 Star Review
2008-12-18 - It's a funny movie and a cute romcom. Randy Quaid is hilarious as the father. He deserves an Oscar. Every scene he's in makes me laugh. He's a hoot. Julia Stiles was fine too. And Shirley McLaine was wonderful as the Grandmother. She truly nailed the role. Mika Boorem was good. I love the opening scene where the two sisters are fighting and they're about to kill each other with knives and then the older one Carolina goes up to the younger sister Georgia(played by Daveigh Chase) and says, "We're not being raised right." It's true. One fight and the grandmother sends both of the two girls outside with sharp knives and tells them, "I'll hose it down when the killing is over with." They both know better of course and stop. Then the dad pulls up with another baby, a little girl who is motherless just like them. Maine. "Her mother is up in a crazy house somewhere," says Randy Quaid's character right before jumping back into his car and driving away. Carolina takes the baby in her arms and tells her life will be different then theirs. Many years later, Carolina works for a TV show and Georgia is a preagant teen and Maine is a young girl obsessed with the lottery. The grandmother's still alive, still embarassing all three of them and their father is still a drunk. Carolina tries to find the right guy all the while trying to help her two younger sisters. It's funny when they're younger Georgia says to Carolina in a fight, "You're an ugly smart witch. No guy will ever marry you." And Carolina spits back, "You're not a fairy princess. You're a fairy witch." And they both fight because Georgia can't yet drink coffee. When they're older though they both get along and Maine turns out funny too obessed with the lottery and sitting on a rocking horse instead of craving a normal childhood. This movie is funny, cute and sweet. It's about three sisters, a crazy grandmother and their hilarious father.

CHECK OUT THE REAL 'AUNT MARILYN' 5 Star Review
2008-07-14 - "The Strangest Treasure" music video on YouTube shows the real life women portrayed in 'CAROLINA' by Shirley MacLaine (Grandma Mirabeau) and Jennifer Coolidge (Aunt Marilyn). 'CAROLINA' is based on Katherine Fugate's wildly eccentric side of her family and is pretty accurate. Anyone who has watched 'CAROLINA' will find it fascinating to see the music video mentioned since it combines home movie extracts of the actual people the film is about. In "The Strangest Treasure" you'll discover that the real Marilyn is a platinum blonde more eccentric than Jennifer Coolidge, who portrays her in 'CAROLINA' (though the dialogue in the film is real). Several of Marilyn's girls, a pretty black one, white one and white one with an afro, are seen in front of the orange door of what had been Marilyn's most popular massage parlor. Marilyn's son, who helped manage the parlors and was nicknamed "J.P." for "Junior Pimp" (since he was still a high school student), is seen trying to climb out of a grave. Trivia: For some reason Katherine changed everyone's name in 'CAROLINA' except for her Aunt Marilyn's. Katherine's other favorite aunt, from the tamer side of the family, has an actual role in 'CAROLINA'. She is non other than the beautiful Barbara Eden. This is an accurate movie about a real life family and perhaps Katherine Fugate's (the writer's) farewell to them.
