Editorial Review:
Adam Sandler fans are sure to enjoy this no-brainer comedy, but everyone else is strongly advised to proceed with caution. Before scoring a more enjoyable hit with his 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the former Saturday Night Live goofball played Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from IRS repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course (he even dukes it out with celebrity golfer Bob Barker), but a retired golf pro (Carl Weathers) and a compassionate publicist (Julie Bowen) help him to perfect his putting game and adjust his confrontational attitude. How much you enjoy this lunacy depends on your tolerance for Sandler's loudmouthed schtick and a shocking number of blatant product-placement endorsements, but if you're looking for broad comedy you've come to the right teeoff spot. --Jeff Shannon
Happy Gilmore Reviews:
Go To Your Happy Place!
2009-11-22 - HAPPY GILMORE is a surprisingly funny and likable film. It doesn't take itself seriously and neither should the viewer as it is just plain fun whether you are a golf fan or not. Adam Sandler plays a failed hockey player with lots of problems. His girlfriend has just left him because she doesn't want to be with a "loser" and his grandmother is forced to make quilts in an abusive nursing home because her own house is being repossessed due to unpaid taxes. Fortuitously Happy discovers he has an amazing golf drive and with a little coaching from a one handed golf pro played by Carl Withers is able to join the pro tour with hopes of earning enough money to get Grandma's house back. Hilarity ensues as blue collar Happy who has anger management problems and his fans are classic fish out of water in the genteel golf world. Happy has an amusing nemesis, Shooter, who tries to block his new found golf success at every turn. All ends happily and Mr. Gilmore even ends up with a cute new girlfriend. This movie is rated PG-13 which is appropriate as this is actually a pretty mild but funny movie for the Jr. High crowd and older to enjoy.
Doesnt Work
2009-08-07 - Happy Gilmore is my favorite Adam Sandler movie and I was so excited to finally have it. But it skips the entire part of the movie with Bob Barker and the final match between Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin. That really upset me. It will freeze at certain parts in the movie too. And I didnt scratch it or anything, I took it out of its case and put it in my dvd player, and it just skips that part and freezes. That really made me mad.
