Editorial Review:
For one brief, shining moment, there was a place known as Camelot--and this 1961 recording is the only document available of JFK's favorite musical, the one that's been used to describe his presidential administration ever since. Truthfully, Lerner and Loewe's musical score for this retelling of the King Arthur story doesn't measure up to My Fair Lady, which was still playing when Camelot opened on December 3, 1960. That being said, the three principals here were stronger musically than their 1968 film counterparts--Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet (who became a star as Lancelot, thanks to "If Ever I Would Leave You") could sing, while the pre-Liz Richard Burton could recite those great lines with Shakespearean flair, even if he never scored a hit with "MacArthur Park." --Bill Holdship
Camelot (Original Broadway Cast) Reviews:
The definitive Camelot
2009-06-04 - How can you ever go wrong with Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet?? Those two magnificent voices put all other versions of this show to shame. Even Richard Burton's speak-singing here is perfreable to others because of his vitality and enthusiasm. Yup - still the best version out there.
Love it!
2009-04-25 - Another great musical CD for musical fans. The cast is excellent. Perfect voices and sound...but that is always true of Julie Andrews.
a great musical - but a disappointment for me
2009-03-21 - After listening many lovely musicals by Lerner and Loewe I must say that Camelot was a disappointment for me. First: the recording is tubby - I know that even in the early sixties CBS could provide better sound. But secondly: also the music of Frederic Loewe disappointed me. Of course there are "If I ewer I would leave you", "What do the simple folks do" and others but I find a great deal of music merely well-written and routine. There is not the same inspiration as before.
But of course it`s interesting to listen the music of the original production. Richard Burton speech-sings much better than Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady" and Julie Andrews has a wonderful voice. Also other singers are fine.
Good music
2008-09-15 - Very pleased with the selections I received. Arrived in very good condition and enjoying them.
A must have!!
2008-09-10 - I absolutely loved the music and the voices of Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Robert Goulet. Everyone should have this in their music library.
