Editorial Review:
This is music of defiance in the face of death. The Nazi regime banned performances by Jewish composers, but there were courageous musicians who dared to create even in the ghettos and death camps. Art from Ashes unearths some of their chamber works and celebrates the irrepressible human spirit.
Sachsenhausen (Theresienstadt), Terezin, Auschwitz, and Wülzburg gave birth to some of these works by composers whose names are barely remembered; Dauber, Berlinski, Schulhoff… New works by Paul Schoenfield and David Stock also appear, commissioned by Music of Remembrance, the Seattle-based organization dedicated to preserving these treasures. Top-notch performances led by Mina Miller ensure this repertoire will survive in fine form.
