Editorial Review:
Romantic Comedy. Alex (Luke Wilson) is an author whose writer's block and gambling debts have landed him in a jam. In order to get loan sharks off his back, he must finish his novel in 30 days or wind up dead. To help him complete his manuscript he hires stenographer Emma (Kate Hudson). As Alex begins to dictate his tale of a romantic love triangle to the charming yet somewhat opinionated stenographer, Emma challenges his ideas at every turn. Her unsolicited yet intriguing input begins to inadvertently influence Alex and his story and soon real life begins to imitate art.
Description of Alex & Emma (Widescreen Edition):
For perhaps the first time in her career, Kate Hudson doesn't just imitate the twinkle of her mother, Goldie Hawn--and proves to be a winning romantic lead in her own right. Hudson plays Emma, a stenographer hired by a desperate writer named Alex (Luke Wilson, The Royal Tenenbaums, Legally Blonde), who has to finish a book in 30 days. Of course, a tentative romance blooms between them; but as Alex begins to interweave elements of his life into the love triangle of his novel--including a suspiciously Emma-esque character named Anna--Emma wonders if the novel's sexy other woman has a real-life counterpart as well. Though Alex & Emma suffers from some bland, formulaic elements, it also features flashes of engaging wit. Hudson dampens her gleam, but because she's not working so hard to be adorable, a relaxed and more unique charm comes forth. --Bret Fetzer
Alex & Emma (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
love the storyline!
2009-11-14 - This was a cute movie! I loved the storyline and how the romance was taking place in his story and real life at the same time. Very cute story idea, a great addition to my chick flick collection!
a retread of Paris When It Sizzles
2009-01-11 - Did anyone else see this movie and realize it was a redo of Audrey Hepburn's movie Paris When It Sizzles? I've yet to hear anyone say so!
Otherwise, I found it entertaining, but not as much as her other romantic comedies.
Capsule review for "Alex & Emma"
2008-12-22 - Surprisingly OK romantic comedy. I found it while zapping between movie channels, and watched it from beggining to end, with commercials in between. The device to tell the story is interesting (writer and typist share the creative process during 30 days). In more capable hands, we could be talking about a classic. As it is, "Alex & Emma" stands as a cute comedy for those hours when our brain can forgive such guilty pleasures.
One Dimensional and Simplistic... Undeniably Fun
2008-11-17 - If you're looking to view a great rom com in the vein of "Kate and Leopold" "The Holiday" or "You've Got Mail" by all means, avoid this film. If you're looking for a semi-fun way to spend an hour and a half, look no further. "Alex and Emma" is basically a formulatic screenplay with very little improvisation or creativity put directly to screen by very good leads. There's not much at work in this movie... but what's there is is charming, funny and sweet most of the time.
One of my favorites
2008-06-01 - I thought this movie was smart, funny and original.
Have seen it several times which is all I need to say as far as my tastes go.
In my top 10 lists.
