  • Editorial Review:
Academy Award® winner Diane Keaton, Academy Award® nominee Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes are all in for the crime of their lives! Deep inside the most secure bank in America, three desperate women from very different worlds cook up the most unlikely heist of the century: Smuggle out millions of dollars in worn-out currency headed for a Federal Reserve shredder every day. Taking the cash is going to be easy but getting away with it will be insane! Ted Danson, Christopher McDonald (HAPPY GILMORE), Roger Cross (24) and Stephen Root (OFFICE SPACE) co-star in this wild comedy caper from the creator of THELMA & LOUISE about chasing your dreams, beating the system and paying the price for MAD MONEY!

    Description of Mad Money:
Take three women in need of cash, a slew of money about to be shredded, and a plot that nicks a bit from 2005's Fun with Dick and Jane and you've got Mad Money. Diane Keaton stars as Bridget, a stay-at-home wife whose life as she knows it ends when her husband loses his cushy, high-paying job. Her college degree in literature turns out to be useless, so she accepts a janitorial position at the local bank. There she meets Nina (Queen Latifah) and Jackie (Katie Holmes), who could use some spare scratch as well. Suddenly, it dawns on Bridget that the bank has plenty of what they need: money! Because the gals are so cute and nice, it's clear they're not really going to rob the bank. What they will do, though, is take the old bills headed for the shredder and recycle it back into the economy by spending it. (Oh heck, they're basically stealing the money.) Played for laughs, the movie doesn't bother to discuss the economic ramifications of what would happen if too much money was recirculated, but that's neither here nor there. The trio of personable actors--particularly Keaton--does a good job of making the characters likable, even in some unbelievable situations. But Keaton deserves better than Mad Money, which isn't really funny enough to be a comedy and doesn't have enough romance to qualify as good chick flick. Still, Keaton, Latifah and Holmes share warm camaraderie. It'd be fun to see them reunited in a film that had a little more weight to it. Ironically, Mad Money was directed by directed by Callie Khouri, who wrote Thelma & Louise and Something to Talk About--movies that had all the key components (compelling storyline and characters worth cheering on) that Mad Money is lacking. --Jae-Ha Kim

    Mad Money Reviews:
    $$Mad Money$$ 5 Star Review
2009-11-03 - Funny Funny movie! If you haven't seen it yet, you should$$ Makes you want to get a job at the Federal Reserve$$$

Is it just me, or was this kind of funny? 4 Star Review
2009-10-13 - I totally expected to hate this, and really I ONLY watched it because my wife wanted to; that and the fact that Queen Latifah is so amazing in everything (even the movies that are horrible). What I found so fascinating was that I actually was highly entertained, despite the fact that the film starred the `ever-so-crazy' Katie Holmes and Diane Keaton, the queen of neurotic overacting. Let's face it, Keaton was once a goddess on the coat-tails of Meryl Streep. Her early work with Woody Allen is beyond genius, and her early 80's success was well deserved (UGH, watch her in `Reds'...she is simply flawless), but as of late Keaton falls victim to her own talent. Where her neurotic spasms once felt fresh and endearing (watch her in `Manhattan Murder Mystery', where she is crazy yet totally delightful), they now appear overreaching and overdone.

Like a turkey; a burnt one.

In `Mad Money' I was kind of expecting `Because I Said So' (horrifyingly ridiculous movie) Keaton, but what I got was more like `Something's Gotta Give' (much better film, MUCH better performance) Keaton. She is all over the place, but in a good way. She's actually really funny, and she manages to capture a little piece of the Keaton I fell in love with all those years ago.

The film is one of those movies that is so preposterous it might actually make sense. You ever hear one of those stories that is so stupid and so unbelievable that it can't be made up? That's how `Mad Money' feels. It's one of those plots that is beyond believable, so far-fetched that it actually could be possible; you know.

Bridget Cardigan likes being rich, but when her husband gets laid off she finds her checks bouncing and her house up for sale. She winds up taking a custodial job in order to receive benefits and concocts this plan to rob the bank she's cleaning. She enlists the help of Jackie, the diabetic half-wit and Nina, a single mother trying to do right by her two sons, to help her rob the bank of money their just going to destroy anyways. It's a full proof plan, until Bridget gets a little too greedy. I'm telling you, watch it, it's one of those ridiculous plots that starts to make a LOT of sense when it's all said and done.

I think my wife is going to start working at the local bank tomorrow.

The film is far from perfect, but it is enjoyable, really enjoyable. Keaton is her neurotic self, but it works here. Latifah is a little laid back for my tastes, but she handles herself well and when she hits, she hits hard. Katie Holmes reminded me of what I saw in her pre-Cruise. She is sweet and charming and endearing, despite her character's apparent craziness. The men here are just kind of bystanders, but Ted Danson (who had a major comeback with `Damages') fits right into the mood of the film, and Adam Rothenberg will have the ladies paying attention (he reminds me of Butler, which is a good thing).

Watch it. It's funny. Sure, it's not a `great' movie, but it's entertaining, and as one of my Ammy friends (looking at you MKIA) said to me recently...I need to just lighten up, and so I did.

Mad Mad Mad Money!! 5 Star Review
2009-10-12 - Most people didn't like the movie 'cause they didn't get what they expected. I was one of those people. I watched it in the cinemas and it was not at all what I wanted in the movie. I was bored, to be exact. But then, I saw it on sale and figured why not buy it. And as the ending flips out like a storm, I feel bedazzled by it! I mean, I asked myself, how come I didn't like it before. But I guess I was maybe tired somehow. Anywyas, It's really great and it gives you a whole new prespective of bank robbery. It's fun, clever and it's absolutly MAD!!

Great movie, regardless of what the so-called movie reviewers say! 5 Star Review
2009-09-28 - My entire family loved this movie (hubby, pre-teen daughter, adult son and his wife, and myself). I learned a long time ago not to listen to the movie critics for the most part because anything they do not like I usually do. Frankly, I would love to see a sequel to this movie, but I know that won't happen since it was deemed a flop by the ones who matter - the stupid critics. Regardless of their opinion, I thought this was a great comedy and showed the "little people" winning for a change. I was not a big Katie Holmes or Queen Latifah fan until I saw this. Now I cannot wait to see them in another film. Diane Keaton, Ted Danson, Christopher McDonald, all of the actors in this film did a great job in my opinion. I highly recommend this just for some good old fun!

    Cute Movie 4 Star Review
2009-03-29 - This isn't the best movie, but it is still worth a watch. I own this because I really enjoyed it and feel the ending wasn't really that predictable. It was filled with drama and a great storyline that kept me interested. Although it is probably more along the lines of a chick flick, I still think its a great movie to watch, at least once
