Editorial Review:
Relive all the heart-warming moments of the unforgettable film that explores life's most rewarding occupation in Parenthood. Steve Martin stars as Gil Martin, a funny and loving husband who's also trying too hard to be the "perfect" parent to his uniquely different kids. Rick Moranis, Keanu Reeves, Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen and Dianne Wiest also star in this family affair you'll want to watch again and again!
Description of Parenthood (Special Edition):
Ron Howard's 1989 hit, written by fellow family men Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (Splash, A League of Their Own), is an original comedy about contemporary life and the eternal responsibilities of raising children. Steve Martin has never been better than as a dedicated husband and father trying (and inevitably failing, as do most of us) to balance the demands of his kids and his job. The actor, like his character, throws himself into the part quite touchingly, never more so than in a scene where a hired clown fails to show up at a children's party and Martin's character unabashedly provides the entertainment. Good as Martin is, this is actually an ensemble piece with numerous actors playing members of the same family, with cross-generational joys and disappointments in the air--and parents in conflict, children in love, and so on. Jason Robards is very good as a patriarch who finally accepts the reality that the son he adores (Tom Hulce) is a major screwup. --Tom Keogh
Parenthood (Special Edition) Reviews:
Awesome
2009-12-09 - This movie is awesome. It's a very funny family film that deals with all the complications of family, growing up, and children. It deals with all different kinds of people. Professionals, nerotics, divercees, screw ups, and kids who are trying to find out who they are. It's a funny twist on harsh realities. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys whatching movies. It doesn't really matter what kind of movies you like especially, becuase this movie can find a place in every movie buffs heart. Be sure to check it out!
Crude
2009-11-24 - It seems the only thing that kept this movie from being rated R is the lack of nudity. Full of off-color humor and situations that will have you reaching for the remote when kids are around. Teen sex, pregnancy, language, and suggestive site gags ruin what could be a good premise for a movie -- siblings raising their own families in the shadow of a preferred son. Not the the family movie it appears to be.
GREAT FAMILY MOVIE
2009-08-31 - Parenthood (Special Edition)
Great service from Amazon, as always!!!!
Super good family movie!!
A lot of misery for a comedy
2009-07-20 - I am definitely in the minority here, but for me this movie didn't work. The cast is incredible and the acting is really, really good but I just didn't find the situations that funny. Steve Martin is one of my favorite actors and I enjoyed watching him as well as all the other siblings as they interacted. The acting alone would have lead me to give a 5-star rating.
What bothered me was so many of the "humorous" situations weren't humorous. The disfunction in many cases was so over the top as to be bothersome -- one character was such a juvenile delinquent and so messed up that you could envision him taking a gun to school and opening fire (I didn't find that funny).
TO PARENTS: Everyone describes this as good, clean fun and while that is true for parts of the movie, it often was anything but clean. There are multiple scenes in the movie that are totally inappropriate for kids and I was caught off-guard by that. I watched this with my family (including my 14-year-old) and we ended up fast-forwarding through some sections since the topics were very racy and VERY graphic.
Wanted to like it, but didn't.
Forget "Cheaper By The Dozen"; this one's the real deal!
2009-07-19 - This has become one of my favorite Ron Howard films. Steve Martin has done family fare before--such as the recent "Cheaper By The Dozen" films--but "Parenthood" seems closer to reality as it chronicles the successes & failures of family life. Martin is brilliant as usual as a man struggling to juggle his job with parenting...and failing spectacularly as it so often happens in real life. Martin gets first billing, but he is supported by a superb supporting cast. Dysfunction runs rampant among brothers, sisters, children, parents & grandparents. There is much to laugh at, and much to identify with. Martin's character declares at one point that "life is so messy". How true! And Mary Steenburgen's character later counters with: "What do you want? Guarantees?" Also so true. The film's script seems to just say that life is what it is, and you can only do what you can as a parent.
Funny, touching and insightful...and boosted by many terrific performances.
