Editorial Review:
In the tradition of Sixteen Candles, this poignant, tender and very funny film tells the story of Rupert Marshetta (Keanu Reeves, The Matrix), a high school dropout struggling to find himself in a small Pennsylvania town. An offbeat inventor, Rupert is stuck working in the coal mines with his father (Fred Ward, Short Cuts) and longs for the heart of Carla (Amy Madigan, Field of Dreams), the beautiful and more romantically-experienced owner of the local drive-in. Rupert and Carla cook up a scheme to kidnap his father but run into a snag when Rupert's mother (Bonnie Bedelia, Die Hard) doesn't want her husband back. It's a unique look into the life of one very unusual young man, who has something wonderful to say to all of us.
Prince of Pennsylvania Reviews:
Multi-layered
2009-02-24 - I watched this on IFC the other day. It's very cute, fluffy and fun, but there were some serious issues in it, too. Excellent cast. Rupert is a great character, and I find myself hoping that things worked out for him, silly as that may sound.
a great old title
2009-01-27 - it's good to see that 80s movies get a DVD release - pity they don't bother putting subtitles options, I would have really appreciated it. I wasn't expecting any extras, but the subtitles would have been very welcome.
The movie is still a great watch after all these years...
Young wacky and crazy Keanu
2003-04-12 - An offbeat film with offbeat characters. Keanu is fun but the older woman he has an affair with was definitely miscast. There is no believability in the chemical attraction there. Keanu kidnaps his Dad for money but his plan backfires. The whole family is offbeat and a little wacky. Watch only if you're a Keanu fan.

Early Keanu
2003-04-12 - For all women who like Keanu Reeves (and who doesn't?), this movie protrays him as a young misfit teenager, and he is very young in this movie. His character is funny but the story doesn't quite come off with enough believability. He kidnaps his father to get money to run off with an older woman, who is miscast in her part. Everything goes haywire - but what could you expect with a script like this one. I enjoy Keanu so it was fun to watch him, but getting through the whole movie was difficult. Skip this one unless you're a real Keanu fan.
Crazy and offbeat
2003-04-12 - A young Keanu is definitely wacky and the older woman he supposedly loves is miscast in her part. There is no believability in the chemical attraction! Keanu kidnaps his Dad to get money but the whole plan backfires! Everyone in the family is a little offbeat. Watch this only if you are an avid Keanu fan!
