  • Editorial Review:
America's favorite "Idols" Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson make the leap to the big screen in this high-energy comedy set during spring break in Miami-where the music, dancing, and fun in the sun never stop. It's love at first splash when a shy singer (Clarkson) from Texas hooks up with a cute Pennsylvania college student (Guarini) at the ultimate beach party, but a series of mix-ups and misunderstandings may prevent their budding romance from reaching the final round!

Description of From Justin To Kelly (Special Edition):
Kelly Clarkson's fresh-faced, small-town-girl charm--the charisma that led her to win the first season of American Idol--is on full display in From Justin to Kelly, a contemporary beach-party movie co-starring her former competition, Justin Guarini. The flimsy plot--Kelly and two gal pals go to the beach for spring break, where one of her friends gets jealous of Kelly and tries to ruin her budding romance with Justin--is just an excuse for glossy pop musical numbers, in which Kelly, Justin, and the rest of the cast exercise their glossy throats with lots of white soul vocal stylings. The best musical numbers suggest a new kind of disco-fueled pop operetta, with everyone singing the story along; you may wish that Kelly and Justin sang their way through the entire movie, never speaking at all. Plenty of skin--from girls and boys--is on display, but the overall tone is squeaky clean. --Bret Fetzer

From Justin To Kelly (Special Edition) Reviews:
Fun musical/beach flick 4 Star Review
2009-05-21 - All these ultra-low reviews are ridiculous. What were these people expecting? A serious drama with superb acting? An action film? Far from it, 2003's "From Justin to KellY" is a fun musical/beach film in the manner of Elvis films and the 60's beach flicks. One look at the dvd and it's obvious.

When viewing films of this ilk it's time to just kick back, turn your brain off and have a good time. On this level "From Justin to Kelly" works fabulously. It's pretty much just as good or better than any Elvis or beach movie you can think of. Filmed in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area, the story deals with the romantic adventures of youths on Spring Break. Keeping with the traditions of the genre there's no raunch or moronic sex/bathroom humor; the film has an appealing innocence.

Another highlight is that there are more gorgeous bikini-clad babes per minute than practically any movie out there (dudes too, if you're a woman).

To be expected, the songs featured are all substance-less modern pop ditties. This type of music isn't my cup of tea but it fits the upbeat and fun vibe of the film.

I'm hardly an American Idol aficionado but I admit that I do enjoy the show if I see it (my wife watches it); and Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini, the two stars of the film, are two of the more likable "idols" over the years. (I also confess to liking Katharine McPhee, Bo Bice, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Kelly Pickler and Clay Aiken). (I'm just joking about Aiken -- ha, ha!) To be expected, Kelly and Justin aren't the best actors but they're not so bad that it prevents you from enjoying the film. They did a fine job all things considered.

One can't bring up American Idol without mentioning the ever-present Kimberly Caldwell (from the channel station). She's an undeniably good-looking woman but she tends to seriously grate on the nerves. The reason I bring her up is, if you've ever secretly fantasized about seeing her chopped in half, be sure to check out the goofy gorefest "Wrong Turn 2: Dead End" (2007) (I'd call it a horror film but it's way too silly and over-the-top to be horrifying). This film makes your fantasies come true!

Side A of the dvd features the 81-minute fullscreen version of the film whereas Side B has the 90-minute extended widescreen cut, which has a couple of extra dance numbers. The dvd also features a commentary with the two stars & director, as well as 3 deleted scenes.

If you're in the mood for an innocent beach flick turn your brain off and enjoy!

    A Disaster. 1 Star Review
2008-09-03 - From Justin to Kelly is so deliciously awful. I am a big Kelly Clarkson fan but what was she thinking? The only thing great about this turkey is Kelly's beautiful and powerful voice but she is no actress or dancer. Justin Guarini is even worse, they have no chemistry whatsoever, not sure why everyone thought these two songbirds had a relationship in real-life? I can't even say this film is a guilty pleasure because it's not worth seeing more than once. Avoid at all costs.

Not as bad as they say 3 Star Review
2007-08-28 - This movie gets a bad rap because alot of those who watched it for the first time did not already know the personalites of the top two contestants on the First Season of Idol.
If you are a fan of the first season it is not nearly as bad.
It would have been better to use all of the top 10 to fill the roles on this film than to get a bunch of no names.
Tamyra Gray especially would have done a better job as Kelly's best friend, and it's obvious that is who they are modeling her after.
On the non theatrical version on the dvd you actually get to see Justin do more than they let him in the non extended version, which was at the theathers.
His sincere solo "From me to You" would have given the film more substance., and his dance number with Kelly and the rest of the gang "Shining Star" would have given it more weight upon it's inital release.
Why they were cut is really strange to me.
The only think I can think of is that in these two numbers Justin, the Runner Up, out shines Kelly, the Winner, which he did most of the first season anyway.

    Awsome 4 Star Review
2007-06-29 - it was a good movie it sort of reminded me of grease tho. but it was amazing the dance rutines were out of this world. the sory line was all right. i wish there was a soundtrack cd somewhere to buy i likes all the songs

It's Not All That Bad 5 Star Review
2007-01-16 - A good movie reminds me when I was a teenager. This movie is more for pre-teens who are looking for that special moment. Justin Guarini was hot! Kelly Clarkson was awesome as well. But you must admit Justin Guarini can move and make you feel like a teenager all over again!
