All I Ever Wanted (Limited Edition CD/DVD) Reviews:
All I Ever Wanted...But Not All Kelly is Capable Of
2009-10-27 - Despite it being nearly seven years since the first season of American Idol, most people still tend to associate the program with its first winner, Kelly Clarkson. With her last album, My December, Kelly seemed to be interested in breaking away (no pun intended) from this image, although her attempts were marred by conflicts with the label over her choice of material. As a result, her newest album seems to be, in some respects, a step backwards as one gets a distinct impression that Kelly did not get much say in the songs. What it lacks in depth, it makes up for in commercial appeal, although this does not necessarily imply a stronger album.
Catchy first single, "My Life Would Suck Without You", shows Kelly at her commercial best, although it is reminiscent of some of her earlier hits. This track maintains a slight element of bitterness, as Kelly proclaims, "being with you is so dysfunctional" in the exceptional bridge. It's a rather unconventional love song, talking about how breaking up was a mistake. "I Do Not Hook Up", co-written by Katy Perry, suffers mostly from seeming more like a Katy-sound-alike than a song specifically intended for Kelly. To be fair, Katy had recorded the song first, for her own album. It's a good song overall, with an excellent message, however it lacks anything to make it distinctly "Kelly". In contrast, "Cry" stands out as an early album highlight. Kelly had a hand in writing this one, and it is definitely noticeable. This is the first song to really show off the power of Kelly's voice, and has much more depth to the lyrics. It is also the first track here to really show any passion."Don't Let Me Stop You" is a fan favourite, and with good reason. It is radio-friendly enough that it could easily have been released, with rather witty lyrics in places. Here Kelly sings about telling her man to just leave if he's not that into her. It's a confident song, and another one with an excellent message of letting go of someone who's not as interested in the relationship.
"All I Ever Wanted" is the one track that seems reminiscent of My December, with a darker sound and theme. It is another album highlight, proving once again that, in spite of her talent for commercial pop, Kelly really shines on the deeper, darker material. It's also one of the more emotive deliveries available throughout the album. "Already Gone" has garnered criticism for being similar to Beyonce's "Halo", due to using the same producer and a similar backing track. Kelly herself had criticized the choice of this song as a single due to the similarities. As for the song itself, it's a good ballad with well-written lyrics. "If I Can't Have You" is reminiscent of the kind of track Pink might release, although that is a good thing. It's a catchy dance track, balanced with interesting lyrics. The only slight problem is that Kelly sounds a little muffled amongst the production, however it is not enough to detract from the song as a whole. This is definitely one of the dark horses of the album, as it grows on you more with each listen. The bridge is exceptional. "Save You" brings us back to a beautiful ballad, arguably stronger than "Already Gone". This song shines due to its lower-key production, giving Kelly plenty of room to shine with a powerful and passionate vocal delivery. Ryan Tedder definitely redeems himself with this one.
"Whyyawannabringmedown" is easily the weakest track the album has to offer. It's an aggressive track, and fans of Kelly's more rock-style tracks may enjoy it. However, it seems extremely out of place among the rest of the pop-radio-friendly tracks. It is something of a grower, however, but there is much better on the album. "Long Shot" is the second track that originally belonged to Katy Perry, and arguably much stronger than "Hook Up". Although Kelly's vocals again sound very similar to Katy's, this song sounds much less copy-cat. Unlike "I Do Not Hook Up", I can see Kelly writing a song like this herself. While some may think Kelly has not made this her own at all, it seems like the kind of song that could have fit quite comfortably on either of her previous albums (excluding Thankful). "Impossible" is another hidden gem, and proves once more that Tedder's productions can be varied and engaging. This is another track that Kelly had a hand in penning, and again it shows. It's interesting to note that although Kelly's contributions were more limited compared to on My December, those tracks she was involved with inject a similar style to that album. This is easily an album highlight as well. "Ready" is more of a low-key mid-tempo, and another track which Kelly had a hand in. It is a generally strong track although it suffers a little from a weak chorus. This is one of the songs that tends to be overlooked as filler, although this is definitely filler at its best.
"I Want You" is more of a fun track, and one of the album's biggest growers. This gives some evidence of Kelly's versatility, and may not be the most contemporary sound. However, Kelly pulls it off brilliantly. Upon first listen, it sounds rather immature and forgettable, but it's the kind of track that gets stuck in your head and stays there. "If No One Would Listen" can't help but give the impression of speaking to Kelly's situation with her label, given the impression that she had little say with this album. The song is a cover, and Kelly does an excellent job. It is an emotive performance, and an excellent album closer and highlight. However, with the deluxe edition, two bonus tracks are included as well. "Tip of the My Tongue" comes first, and is an excellent addition. The lyrics are well-written, although the track as a whole is somewhat reminiscent of Pink. This is another song which shows why Kelly is at her best with the darker styled music. Finally, the album ends with the brilliant "The Day We Fell Apart", which is a little more radio-friendly that the track before. Like "My Life Would Suck Without You", it seems to be talking about a rather dysfunctional relationship that Kelly wants to stay in nonetheless. An excellent album closer as well.
Overall Mark: 4/5
This album fares much better when considered on its own, rather than as a follow-up to the brilliant My December. The major problem with this album is the lack of identity. Many of the tracks are reminiscent of other artists: Katy Perry, Beyonce, Pink, and some have even compared one to Miley Cyrus. One cannot help but get the feeling that this album was largely directed by the label, with little input from Kelly. This is especially obvious since many of the tracks Kelly helped write are more similar to the style of My December. In terms of the quality of the songs themselves, most of them are actually quite well-done and Kelly manages to inject enough emotion to make them believeable. However, at times the album becomes inconsistent as it sounds more of a mish-mash of other artists in attempt to be radio-friendly. It's a good effort, and in the end the quality of the songs themselves combined with Kelly's undoubtable talent are enough to make a thoroughly enjoyable album. Those who prefer Kelly's pop songs will enjoy this more than My December, whereas those looking for depth may be a little disappointed.
Another Hit-Maker!
2009-10-16 - This is my 2nd Kelly Clarkson CD and this one is by far, some of her best work yet. I've been a fan since she won IDOL and she has grown into a pop culture favorite because of it. But it is Kelly's INCREDIBLE voice that has kept fans wanting more. This CD delivers just that. I recived the deluxe edition back in July and I can't stop playing it. (I also purchased another one for my niece.) EVERY song is good and there are at least SEVERAL that could easily be #1 songs, if not Top 10's on the Billboard Charts! (One of the bonus songs, "Tip of My Tongue" should be released as a single. It's definitely a Billboard #1 kind of tune!) The songs are catchy and like other reviewers have said, they stick in your head. It's songs like that that become huge hits. I can easily imagine that this CD will not only go platinum many times over, but that it will also become a Grammy winner as well. This is definitely Kelly Clarkson's year and she has certainly earned it!
Irresistably catchy in most spots. Kelly is back! 3.9 stars. (C+)
2009-07-05 - Let's get this out of the way:
Do I think this album is perfect? Do I think it could have been better? Do I think it's her best album?
The answers in order are No, Yes!! and No but it's probably her third best (after Breakaway and My December).
Sometimes I don't like all of the production gloss and the guitars all over because although Kelly's voice is usually heard, it is still covered a bit on some tracks. I must agree with others when they said that older Kelly tracks felt more natural.
Don't be totally turned off though. The lyrics and delivery of some of these songs is still 100% Kelly.
Here's a track by track rating:
#1# My Life Would Suck Without You -> First off, why are people saying that they don't like the title or that she's trying to be tough by having it named that? She's just being herself and although she didn't co-write every track like she did on My December which I totally applauded, she still gets my vote. You'd have to be living under a rock to have not heard this bouncy, in-your-face track yet. It's Kelly's first single off the album. Good track, but there are better on the album. 4/5
#2# I Do Not Hook Up -> Co-written by Katy Perry and the newest judge on American Idol, Kara DioGuardi, this is a somewhat standard pop-rock tune up until the chorus, which bursts with pop energy. Some say it's their favorite track, I say they picked a good one. 4.25/5
#3# Cry -> Pretty heartfelt. A ballad of sorts. Probably could've fit on Breakaway. One of the better tracks on the album and my most played Kelly Clarkson track on my iPod. Possibly the best vocal on the album. 4.25/5
#4# Don't Let Me Stop You -> This song is OK. I like some of the lyrics. But like I Don't Hook Up, it's somewhat standard pop. I guess it's a song that could've been left off the album. 3.5/5
#5# All I Ever Wanted -> This song really reminds me of Pink's Funhouse track. The guitar totally gives off that vibe. My favorite part of this particular track is the bridge right after the second chorus. It doesn't last long, but for that moment, Kelly's vocals are sweet. 3.75/5
#6# Already Gone -> The second best slow track here (after Track 8). Kelly Clarkson and Ryan Tedder wrote this song together and it's beautiful. It's better than most tracks here. 4.4/5
#7# If I Can't Have You -> This song sounds strangely similar to Miley's "Fly On The Wall". If I was in the studio with Kelly while this was coming into form, I would have mentioned that and made them change it a bit! But give it a listen or two because it has Kelly stamped all over it otherwise. "If I can't have you, I don't want anyone, I don't want anyone!" Kelly proclaims. One of the more solid fast tracks. 3.8/5
#8# Save You -> This song is amazing. It's the best ballad (and song) on the album. I don't know if they could pull off a video for this track, but they should try, cause it should most definitely be a single. You can totally tell that Ryan Tedder had a hand in writing this.
I could totally hear him singing the initial lines himself: "I can tell, I can tell how much you hate this. And deep down inside, you know it's killing me..." The piano break and the drums at the end, as well as the ghost-like vocal runs at the end are what makes this song so good. It's definitely quality and although some think that track 11 or 14 are the most inspirational, I think this one is. 4.5/5
#9# Whyyawannabringmedown -> Written by Sam Watters, Louis Biancaniello, and Dameon Aranda, it is very energetic but also quite love-it-or-really-hate it. I am almost ambivalent. The chorus isn't what it could be. Save for the "Uno, Dos, Tres, Cuatro" I don't really like this. 3/5
#10# Long Shot -> The second and last song to be co-written by Perry. Kelly had no hand in the lyrics. I'm not crazy about this song really. Not much to say about it besides that it's not very...likeable. It's too bob-your-head-along-senselessly and nothing much else. No soul to it. 3.25/5
#11# Impossible -> This is a welcome song compared to the filler that's been plaguing this CD with the last few tracks (you know who you are!). It's not spectacular, but the piano is cool and the lyrics are pretty relate-able. The only problem with it is the chorus. It gets repetitive. 3.8/5
#12# Ready -> Written by Kelly Clarkson (yay!), Aben Eubanks (from My December) and Jason Halbert, this track is somewhat fun. But it also continues the tracks of "pleasant-filler". By the time you get to this track (or maybe beforehand), you will have noticed a trend. This CD is lacking something. 3.8/5
#13# I Want You -> This is a great track after all of the so-so tracks. It's very playful and at first I wasn't so sure about it. But I listened to it a few times and I loved it. It has a beachy-vibe and the lyrics are delivered in a playful way. Can get repetitive though. Oh yeah - and it DOES sound like Duffy sings in this song! o_O 4.4/5
#14# If No One Will Listen -> A ballad written and originally performed by the unknown Keri Noble. Some say this is a great song, some say it's not their favorite. I am gonna agree with the latter but say it's alright. I like some of the lyrics. By the way, I haven't heard the original and don't wish to seek it out. 3.9/5
#15# Tip Of My Tongue -> Not that memorable really. I like some of the lyrics but as a whole this song doesn't do much for me and I really can't stand something about the chorus. Just doesn't gel. 3.5/5
#16# The Day We Fell Apart -> Much better than ToMT. This is a bit heavier than the previous bonus track and it's just as catchy if not more so. Can be put on repeat a few times. 4/5

Awesome...
2009-06-29 - This album is amazing. Kelly is shining brightly through this album. She has an amazing talent and does not disappoint with this album. She totally rocks! I am glad to have purchased this album. I can't pick a favorite on this album. I love all of the songs.
Amazing Talent
2009-05-21 - Ever since she won as our first "American Idol", I had high hopes for this young lady's career. Her latest offering is incredible. Simply because of the "variety" of singing styles and music. Not at all discounting the fact that she sounds so very good in every one of those
aforementioned styles. The heartfelt, crooning ballads. The straight-ahead
pop stuff, the funky dance type of sound. There are just SO MANY catchy tunes on this CD, I find them going through my mind at work often...and
I'm even remembering some of the lyrics, which is really rare !!!!
Some favorites are: "All I Ever Wanted", "Already Gone", "Save You",
"Cry" and "Long Shot". This stuff is excellent driving music!! Windows
down, sunroof open...cruisin' the streets.
Kelly Clarkson is a spunky, vibrant, exciting talent. More power to her, in her hopefully long career !
