Description of Thankful:
Kelly Clarkson, the toothsome winner of Fox TV's first American Idol competition shows that her prime-time win was no fluke. She blithely skips through octaves and genres like a seasoned pro, belting out power ballads like hooky "Low" and the Diane Warren-penned "Some Kind of Miracle," with the aplomb of Pat Benatar in her prime. Clarkson tackles the neo-gospel "Anytime" without flinching, then shows some dirty street cred as she growls through "Miss Independent," a song she penned with Christina Aguilera. But Miss Independent would be a gross misnomer; despite the fact Clarkson co-wrote four of the album's tunes. Clarkson not only had uber record exec/executive producer Clive Davis at her disposal, but an arsenal of producers and songwriters to make sure she didn't make a creative misstep. Despite Clarkson's sublime vocal talents, excessive gloss at times overwhelms the quirky charm and personality she displayed on Idol. --Jaan Uhelszki
Thankful Reviews:
Very ~"Thankful"~ For this Debut!
2009-04-13 - This was an amazing Debut! She deserved to win idol! She can really sing!....i understand that it has been a few years since this CD came out...but i didn't have an account at the the time! LAWL! :]......I have listened to this a lot and it gets a lot of playtime on my ipod classic as well. The singles with this again really stand out on this album. as do with her other singles & Albums! That is a good thing not a bad thing! Remember that! LOL! :).....A moment like this and before your love are not really new mixes as they are or sound like they are re-recorded....they are better this way though. This cd is more focused on the pop stuff then the pop/rock stuff which is o.k. cause i like pop music to. The vocals on here are great. She just has an amazing voice. This is not the best from her out of all four albums but still is 5 stars worthy! :]......If i had to put a standout song on here...low is my choice. being on of the singles it really stands out from the rest...but my favorite song on here is a moment like this! That song is just amazing!!!!! I love it! You should get this if you don't have it already!
a terrific debut album
2009-03-03 - Kelly Clarkson deserved to win on American Idol and this album proves it. Thankful features Kelly performing a broad range of musical genres and that impresses me. No matter what comes her way on this CD, Kelly Clarkson proves she is up to the challenge. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very good, too.
"The Trouble With Love Is" has a bluesy and even soulful flavor to it and Kelly's excellent diction bolsters her performance even more. "The Trouble With Love Is" is a very pretty ballad about the angst that can come when we fall in love and things don't necessarily go right. The percussion makes the music sound so well as Kelly sings. "Miss Independent" sounds most like modern pop mixed with some modern day R&B to spice it all up; this tune showcases Kelly Clarkson's fantastic ability to do a complex number without singing a superfluous note! The musical effects are excellent and "Miss Independent" is clearly a major highlight of this album. "Miss Independent" also highlights Kelly's ability to be a songwriter; Amazon correctly notes that Kelly wrote this with Christina Aguilera.
"Some Kind Of Miracle" has that soulful, modern day R&B flavor to it and this works very well. Kelly bats this straight out of the ballpark and "Some Kind Of Miracle" is a number I could never tire of hearing when Kelly sings it. Again, the percussion makes the musical arrangement very strong. In addition, "Just Missed The Train" rocks hard but Kelly never misses a beat--she tackles this like the pro that she is and always will be! Kelly sings "Just Missed The Train" to perfection--and beyond! If you had any doubt about Kelly Clarkson's ability to perform, by this point in the CD song set you'll be assured that she's a major talent.
"You Thought Wrong" has a modern pop flavor to it mixed with a bit of hard rock and R&B; Kelly and Tamyra Graysings do this one up right! I really like "You Thought Wrong;" and listen also for the title track "Thankful." "Thankful" puts Kelly Clarkson squarely front and center--great! The backup chorus helps--not that Kelly needed it; but it sounds pretty good anyway. "Anytime" has more soulful currents and a slower tempo mixed with a touch of gospel; and Kelly delivers this every bit as good as the other numbers on the CD.
The CD ends with Kelly performing two more songs, "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love." "Before Your Love" is most passionate and I feel all the emotions Kelly sings of when I hear her sing this ballad. "Before Your Love" is a tender ode to the joys of falling in love and just how much love can change your life for the better.
Kelly Clarkson will remain a special talent for years to come. She can take just about any type of song and deliver it with passion, style and class. This album is, of course, a "must-have" for her fans (as if they didn't know that already) and it also makes a great starter CD for people just getting to know the greatness of Kelly Clarkson's talent.
Thankful
2008-05-27 - After listening to the Leona Lewis cd, I decided to give Kelly's debut another listen so that I could compare the two singers. The two main differences regarding the two are that we, Americans haven't gotten to know Leona in the same way that American Idol allowed us to get to know Kelly. And second, I personally felt that "something" when I listen to Kelly's cd - I feel her soul & belief in her songs (even the cheesy ballads) while I felt nothing while listening to Leona's disc.
The songs on this disc are a mix of rock, pop & r&b which was a good way to display her vocal ability and appeal to as many fans of American Idol as possible. My favorite tracks to this day are:
WHAT'S UP LONELY - good contemporary pop 'n' r&b track
JUST MISSED THE TRAIN - beautiful lyrics matched with her vocals, this is a really pretty track
MISS INDEPENDENT - this is still a great catchy pop track
YOU THOUGHT WRONG - excellent duet with Tamyra (wish they'd work on another track together soon)
THANKFUL - I love the simplicity of this song, she doesn't oversing it
SOME KIND OF MIRACLE - I love the choral arrangement of this soulful ballad
The other songs I like are: THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE, LOW & A MOMENT LIKE THIS - all really showcase her vocal ability but I guess I'd heard them so much that I'm kind of burnt out on listening to them repeatedly.
I'd recommend this disc to any fan just to compare how far Kelly has come as an artist.
True, enduring talent...
2008-03-27 - Kelly is one of the singers that will likely be around for the long-haul. She's truly gifted, and able to adapt her voice to the music that she is presenting. Her main weakness is that she is singing a lot of music that other people are writing. I want to see her develop her writing gifts.
Great CD!!!!
2007-12-02 - Kelly Clarkson is a great artist! I don't know why she doesn't like this album or MISS INDEPENDENT that song and this whole cd is great. I actually don't like her newer stuff i don't think that it is as great as her first!!
