  • Editorial Review:
Funnyman Adam Sandler stars in Walt Disney Pictures' Bedtime Stories, the magical family comedy that's packed with adventure and lots of heart. When Skeeter Bronson (Sandler) babysits his sister's (Courteney Cox) children, his imagination runs wild as he dreams up elaborate bedtime stories always casting himself as the hero. Entranced, the children add their own ideas to these once-upon-a-time tales of heroics and chivalry. Then magic happens. These nighttime fantasies become Skeeter's daytime realities, leading him on a real-life adventure in search of his own happy ending. Filled with colorful characters, humor and whimsy, this heartwarming comedy will enchant your entire family again and again.

    Description of Bedtime Stories:
A fantastical tale about a man who makes up bedtime stories for his niece and nephew only to find that they magically come true the next day, Bedtime Stories is a funny and enjoyable film about finding happiness in unexpected places. Skeeter (Adam Sandler) grew up with his sister Wendy (Courteney Cox) in a small hotel run by his father Marty (Jonathan Pryce) which was eventually sold to Barry Nottingham (Richard Griffiths) with the caveat that Skeeter would someday assume a leadership role in the business. Expansion transformed the small hotel into the luxury Nottingham Hotel, but Skeeter is just a handyman with little hope of advancement. When his sister needs to leave the state for a job interview, Skeeter ends up sharing the responsibility of watching her two elementary-age children Bobbi (Laura Ann Kessling) and Patrick (Jonathan Morgan Heit), whom he hasn't seen for years, with Wendy's friend Jill (Keri Russell). Initially an awkward situation, Skeeter and the kids bond over bedtime stories which Skeeter and the children make up. When events in the story start coming true, Skeeter tries to spin the stories to benefit his life, but events take some unexpected turns thanks to the kids' wild imaginations and some strange translations between fiction and reality. New relationships flourish and in the end, Skeeter, Wendy, Mr. Nottingham, Bobbi, Patrick, and Jill each find happiness in a most unexpected place and discover what's really important in their own life. Also worth mentioning is the character Bugsy, a guinea pig with enormous eyes that's sure to have every child begging for their own pet guinea pig. Rated PG for mild rude humor and mild language, but appropriate for most ages 6 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

    Bedtime Stories Reviews:
DVD was Defective 2 Star Review
2009-12-13 - The DVD paused several times, stuttered and I was worried that it wouldn't make it to the end.

Great movie w/very little that is inappropriate for a change! 5 Star Review
2009-12-11 - This is one of those movies that we, the parents, don't mind watching over and over, and not being an Adam Sandler fan per se, I can honestly say I think he is quite funny in this one. We are typically pretty conservative in terms of what we will let our kids watch, but there are only maybe two words that I thought were mildly inappropriate (sexy and stupid were each used once that I recall). There is one kissing scene, but it is not steamy (the kids still say "EWWWW!" though!), and for a change, there are no overt or covert political agendas being promoted as in so many other movies these days.

My only negative, as in almost every-other Disney movie out there, is that they have to take at least one of the parents out of the picture. Why is there ALWAYS an absent parent at the crux of these kids' movies!? I understand that divorce is a huge part of life these days, and thankfully (spoiler alert) these kids get the stable family they need in the end, but, come-on, is it really that hard to write a compelling story around an in-tact family?

Enough ranting. Great original movie for all ages! (our kids are 5 & 7)

Cute premise, bad movie 2 Star Review
2009-12-10 - This movie has a cute premise and, had it been better executed, could have been a very sweet and funny film. There were definitely moments in it that worked. Unfortunately, many of the jokes fell short and I was not invested enough in the characters to care too much about the plot. The worst part, however, was that the script resorted to using offensive racial caricatures in a poor attempt at humor. For me, that ruined the rest of the movie. I will not be showing this one to my kids.

Not what it might have been 2 Star Review
2009-11-25 - I expected this movie to be a lot better than it was, based on the previews and the premise. With a premise like that it could have been great. It really wasted the opportunity to be a great movie. I have to put at least part of that failure on Adam Sandler's shoulders. His sarcastic and lowest common denominator attitude colored the whole movie in shades of bleah. But the writing was also lousy at times - in particular, the Bedtime Stories were pretty pathetically done. Wouldn't you think that in a movie called Bedtime Stories the stories would actually be fun, funny, or just plain good? No, the stories were like lousy SNL skits. I realize that the kids were helping make the story, but their additions were not really the problem. Anyway, the plot of the actual story was also poorly done.

My feeling is that this could have been a GREAT movie and instead ended up as just another fairly bad Adam Sandler type of movie. That said, there are some amusing moments, Keri Russell is divine as always, and Russell Brand was fairly funny. The kids did fine, although it would be nice to just one time see a boy in a movie who doesn't have Little Kid Big Hair syndrome (pet peeve).

This is not a horrible movie. It's a 2 star movie. Kids can watch it and be mildly amused, so can adults. But overall it was a big disappointment to me given what I thought it would and could be.

It was good 4 Star Review
2009-11-08 - It is a good family friendly flick, and one wouldn't have to hesitate to let their kids see it. Kids would find it pretty funny and my kids were laughing through the whole thing. I enjoyed the film.....it was cute and somewhat funny. I think Adam Sandler was alright, and he was his usual self but with family friendly humor. I didn't think Kerri Russell was all that great in this flick, and Courtney Cox, I think, was channeling a little bit of Monica from Friends in this film, but it worked. But my favorite character in the film? Bugsy. That big eyed family pet was hilarious!
If you're looking for a family friendly film this is definitely one!
