Editorial Review:
A disparate group of performers gathers to celebrate the life and music of John Lennon in this 90-minute concert, recorded in 2001 at New York's Radio City Music Hall and originally broadcast on the WB Television Network. Considering both the setting and the fact that it came just three weeks after the events of September 11, it's not surprising that the show has a somewhat somber tone, but that makes Lennon's message of universal peace somehow all the more relevant. As for the songs, the majority come from Lennon's Beatle days, including "In My Life" (Dave Matthews), "Strawberry Fields Forever" (Cyndi Lauper), and "Dear Prudence" (Alanis Morissette); but it's the material from his solo years that yields the most passionate performances, especially by Shelby Lynne ("Mother") and Lou Reed ("Jealous Guy"). Host Kevin Spacey does a surprisingly effective turn on "Mind Games," and the inclusion of Lennon's son Sean is both appropriate and touching. Nice. --Sam Graham
Come Together - A Night for John Lennon's Words and Music Reviews:
Fantastically Incredible!
2009-06-05 - Kevin Spacey and the rest of the people involved with this concert have done an amazing job at honoring the legend that truly was taken too soon. These covers were all heart felt and there were a couple of times during the concert that I had tears coming to my eyes. Kevin's cover of "Mind Games" was simply outstanding. I got chills listening to it. The only comlaint I had with the show was the cover of Instant Karma. It just didn't sound good at all, and that is a shame since it is such a loved song. This is the best tribute concert I have ever seen. After watching it, I was ready to watch it again! Well worth buying.
Come Together - A Night for John Lennon's Words and Music
2009-05-09 - I didn't even know this concert had taken place, but it did even though it took place about a month after the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy. John's son Sean and Rufus Wainwright do a great job on vocals on a couple of songs, and I didn't know Kevin Spacey could sing so well. It's a great tribute to John Lennon. There is also the "Concert for George" that took place a year after his death. Neil Innes appears in it along with Monty Python. Another great DVD.
worth the purchase
2009-02-08 - I've never been a big John Lennon fan, but a friend of mine received this for XMAS and we watched it with several other friends. We were surprised by how good the DVD is overall. I immediately ordered it through Amazon and watch several of the selections every week.
Sad Sad
2009-02-05 - Done with the best of intentions , but an uninspired attempt to convey the simple genius of Lennon to a bunch of rich New Yorkers. A miserable failure.
Kevin Spacy provides the only energy with his note for note rip on Mind Games.
Save your money.
Is there an echo in here?
2008-11-11 - Okay, I know that this was filmed in Radio Music Hall, but there is ENTIRELY too much echo on the DVD release. It's almost impossible to interpret what he is saying due to the rampant echo.
This is mostly a product for the die hard Lennon fangirls and fanboys like myself, but I would have enjoyed it more if there wasn't an over abundance of echo.
Still, a worthy purchase for a great price.
