  • Editorial Review:
The scheme is far from tame. But whose scheme is it? Assume nothing as you venture beyond Blue Bay's elite beach communities and into the murky waters of the Everglades for a mystery of deceit, sex and greed as unpredictable as a hungry gator. And please, keep your hands inside the boat at all times. Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards and Bill Murray star in a swamp-steamy thriller about two high school students, the guidance counselor they accuse of rape and the detectivewho knows there's more to the story.

Description of Wild Things (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray]:
Wild Things is the kind of lurid, trashy thriller that you'll either dive into with unabashed pleasure or turn away from in prudish disgust; it's entirely your choice, but we suggest the former option since it's obviously much more fun. The plot's so convoluted it's hardly worth describing, except to say that it's set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon--yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from Starship Troopers) who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a "nice" young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that's when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie's gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), Wild Things is a bona fide guilty pleasure--the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you'll enjoy it anyway. --Jeff Shannon

Wild Things (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews:
A Good Movie But Lacking In Spots 5 Star Review
2009-12-08 - This is a good cut of the movie. The bonus scenes are interesting and a couple of them really add to the story and make some of the characters more interesting. There are a few extra scenes that are just filler though. The movie itself is really good as is the original DVD. However the special features in this unrated edition are not that great. For example there is no commentary in this version. They easily could have used the existing commentary. There would only be slight gaps in the commentary during the new scenes. Also the other special features are fairly weak.

Overall a good movie but the extras are lacking. If you have the original version stay with that and maybe rent the unrated version and see if it is something you'd like. I own both because I'm a big fan of the movie but many people might not find enough here to warrant a purchases especially if they already own the original DVD.

Good Movie, Good Blu Ray 4 Star Review
2009-05-06 - I'm a big fan of this movie. It has a certain "feel" and atmosphere throughout that is highly appealing to me, lots of shots in the everglades, along a beach/shore..I like that. The who-dun-it part is pretty cool too. The Blu Ray is worth buying; I upgraded from the SD version and was pleasantly surprised.

Ultimately, For Lesibians Only 2 Star Review
2009-03-26 - Wild Things (1998) Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Denise Richards

As campy as a John Waters film and as trashy as a Roger Miller song, Wild Things is set in "South Florida" and the film crew has immense fun with ground level views of gators, snakes & other swampy state natives. But, alas, in the end this movie falls into my most commonly used category of "it should have been better than it was".

The plot is your standard "things are not always what they seem" theme and that is usually what makes for a good thriller or mystery. And while they do load you up with lots of plot twists & turns ... they pretty much over do it and eventually your interest in how the characters are interconnected wanes.

This is what can hurt a movie the most.

When the characters loose their 3-D quality and become flat, 1-D paper cut-out figures, it is hard to connect or identify with them as they go through the motions, no matter how many curveballs they throw at 'cha.

With a great cast and wonderful movie locations what really ruined it for me was all the lesbian kissing & fondling scenes.

Beats "Basic Instinct" by a mile 5 Star Review
2008-09-05 - This is the best "camp" erotic film in the past quarter century, hands down. Not only is it a guilty pleasure for viewers of lesbian acts, but it also shows Kevin Bacons acting skills, which aren't the highest to begin with (he was also the Executive Producer), which probably explains why we get a gratuitous shot of his penis.
I think the true shinning point of the film, is Bill Murray's off-script banter as Matt Dillons laywer. How they got him into this blatant flesh romp is a total wonderment to myself, but without him, I'd be laughing for ALL the wrong reasons.
If you're looking for beautiful scenery of both Florida, and the nakedness of Denise Richards and a rather good looking for her age Theresa Russell, then you will never miss with this over-the-top indulgence in camp film making history.
A true gem that beats "Basic Instinct"...hands down!

Just like the original but much prettier. 5 Star Review
2008-06-11 - I really liked Wild Things the story is good. So when they re-released this on blu-ray I of course picked it up.
Its has really good picture quality. If you liked this movie but never bought it the blu-ray version is the way to go.
