Editorial Review:
With echoing, nervy guitars, driving rhythms, and new-wave synths, the debut from Rock Kills Kid is contemporary post-punk at its most addictive, jagged and atmospheric. Produced by Mark Trobino, the emotional tension woven throughout Are You Nervous? recalls some of the darkest, most angst-filled recordings by The Cure, Joy Division and The Smiths-but with Bono-and Springsteen-inspired raucous rocker Jeff Tucker in the spotlight. For Rock Kills Kid, rock'n'roll is salvation.
Description of Are You Nervous?:
On Are You Nervous?, Rock Kills Kid display a deep affinity for '80s acts such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, U2, and the Cure, yet rarely has a band wearing their influences this prominently on their sleeve sounded more refreshing. On the opening dance floor craze "Paralyzed," the steady rockin' "Hide Away," the frenetic "Don't Want To Stay," the easy-going but evocative "Back To Life," and the radio-ready title track, Rock Kills Kid demonstrate a knack for creating catchy, heartfelt rock & roll-inflected pop that places this outfit in a position to save contemporary music from itself. Rock Kills Kid are a great band that have already climbed to dizzying artistic heights and seem poised to climb to equally impressive commercial ones as well. A new high in American rock music. --Jedd Beaudoin
Are You Nervous? Reviews:
VERY COOL & CATCHY
2009-03-13 - The vocalist sounds a bit BONO-esque (uhm, U2 anyone?) but this is music I can listen to anytime in the car driving long distances.
Tracks 1,3,6, & 10 are my standout favorites but it was track 1 - PARALYZED that I kept hearing at my gym during workouts that got me interested in purchasing the disc.
Not only is the music popppy, catchy and infectious but also atmospheric/ambient and a bit mesmerizing. Even though I paid a penny plus shipping, it's worth a bit more.
Rock Kills Kid Rocks
2008-10-08 - The Cd is good they have a good sound it hasn't changed the music world, but it's a good listen every now and again.
The Mystery of the Great Amazon Order Mix-up
2008-09-30 - Once upon a time I ordered a Korn album off of Amazon and to my surprise I received "Are You Nervous" instead. Having previously heard an excellent song by the name of "cash machine" and being told by someone that they thought it was by a band called Rock Kills Kid I had mixed feelings of both irretation from the mix up and wanting to venture further into what I had fatefully stumbled upon. It turned out Cash Machine was done by a group who call themselves the Hard-Fi. But thanks to their song, someone's misleading advice, and a mysterious Amazon order error I was led on the trail here. I was astonished to find an album filled to the brim with songs reminiscent of bands such as Echo and the Bunny Men, The Cure and most of all The Killers (just to mention a few). Definately one of the best CDs I've ever stumbled upon. Stand out tracks include Raise Your Hands, Paralyzed, Are You Nervous and Hope Song.
(To the reviewer who tried to force his opinion on readers that it should be a "sacrilege" to compare bands to other bands: That's completely rediculous not to want people to compare likenesses between other familiar bands in a review for a new band's first album. No one said that one band was greater than the other -they/we were merely comparing similarities. Even the 'Editorial Reviews' that Amazon itself publishes (under the track listing) compares qualities of this band to legendary 80's bands in the first sentance. I own eight Cure albums and I can honestly say I hear all the parallels between these two groups. That's not to say Rock Kills Kid is better than the Cure. The Cure in my opinion IS definately better. That doesn't mean I hate this particular album though.)
I see that it's been mentioned several times in other reviews but just to re-emphasize if you like newer bands such as The Killers or The Bravery or even Franz Ferdinand you'll appriciate, if not love, this album.
WOW!!!
2007-04-05 - Wow! Rock Kills Kid's freshman album is a breath of fresh air. The first song, "Paralized" is a classic pop rock anthem. A hint of "U2" seems spread throughout the tracks along with simple, yet breathe-taking music. I picked this CD from the recommendation of a music store employee and I was not let down.
Great album
2007-03-22 - In the same mold as The Killers and Boy Kill Boy (to name a couple), these guys are just as good as them. Lead singer's vocals may not be as distinct as others, but music is still great. I would say a little more of 80's flavor. The 1st five songs are hands down GREAT. The last 5 are average.
