Dynasty Reviews:
KISS goes Disco Pop. 3 Star Review
2009-11-11 - Okay, sure, there are some Rockin' tunes on this album, but there is definately no mistaking that strong Disco atmosphere that permeates throughout this album. I can remember back in 1979 when I initially heard the first track, I Was Made For Lovin' You. What the?! This isn't the KISS I know and loved! What happened? Over the years I have grown to appreciate the song, but back then, well, I didn't much care for it. I thought Paul should have put it on his solo album instead of a KISS album. Moving on to song number two, the album picks up considerably with the cover version of the Rolling Stone's song, 2,000 Man, sung by Ace Frehley. Now we're talking! Leave it to Space Ace to rock you out. Then comes another leftover from Paul Stanley's solo album, Sure Know Something. What the Hey? To quote Gene Simmons line from a Family Guy KISS spoof episode, "That does NOT Rock!" Next up is Peter Criss singing about how he can't wait to "..set myself free!" in the Discoey, Dirty Livin'. Hey, Criss, there's a lot of dirty jobs out there, but, I don't think being a drummer in a mega-successful Rock band qualifies in that category. But what do I know? Maybe the cable TV reality show, Dirty Jobs, can do a segment on it to show us all what it's really like? The next track is the album's best, in my opinion, it's Gene Simmon's, Charisma. But it pales in comparison to past Simmons' efforts. It's still pretty good though, and quite catchy. Magic Touch is another Paul Stanley crooner that is a good song, but, sadly, it just doesn't rock. Which brings us to the 2nd best song on this album, Hard Times, which is brought to us by Ace Frehley, who once again rocks us like we need to be rocked on a KISS album. After this comes the Gene Simmons song, X-Ray Eyes, which definitely sounds like a leftover from his solo album. It's not bad, but, not great either. And finally we come to the closer, Save Your Love by the mighty Space Ace. It's an okay song, but, not one of my favorite Frehley creations. Maybe it's the dull way that Paul and the rest of the backup are singing their vocals. They sound so lazy and uninspired in some parts, you can almost picture them reading a magazine in the recording booth while they were singing. Anyway, that concludes KISS Dynasty. Wait a minute? Where's track ten? Shouldn't there be another track to round the album out? Let me guess, no one had any more leftovers from their solo albums to contribute, right? Ha! Just joking. Seriously though, Dynasty is the album that made me start to lose interest in KISS for a few years. It supplied very little of the type of hard rockin' material that I had come to depend on from this great band in the past and I was dissapointed, to say the least. Even the album cover was tepid at best. Just look at those mugs on Frehley and Criss. They do not look like happy campers. Believe me, I know the feeling.

One star or two 5 Star Review
2009-11-01 - A lot can happen in 50 minutes, try 50 years. Last night, that was just like old times. The hard times are dead and gone. Believing, it don't come easy, not for me. But the hard times have made me strong. Not older or wiser, just louder. The hard times have made me see that the hard times ain't where I wanna be. A lot can happen in 50 minutes, try 50 years. I don't wanna be there or even think back. Last night, the same damn night. I don't wanna be there, now I'm on the right track, yeah. It doesn't matter how you hear it, I'm talking to god anyway.

a different side of kiss 4 Star Review
2009-11-01 - I think this is a great album. Sounds like the time period in which is was recorded, which I don't see as a bad thing at all. Showed Kiss would keep up with times and change when needed, while keeping their signature sound.

Ace Frehley has some great stuff on this record, so fans of his should enjoy it.

Very similar to Unmasked, so if you like that one, you'll probably like this one too.

A Solid KISS Effort with Thanks to Ace 4 Star Review
2009-10-25 - Yeah, yeah, disco, selling out, getting too big. Let's use a little hindsight here. So, "I Was Made for Lovin' You" and "Sure Know Something" are disco. So what? The Stones did disco, too. It worked, and these songs do, too. Actually, these Paul Stanley tracks are more convincing than some of his harder rocking efforts.

Dynasty is a solid album from KISS. I first heard it when it came out thirty years ago; it was the first of the KISS reissues that I bought. I think of it as the album that Ace Frehley truly came into his own. It was the first KISS album after the much-lauded, poorly-selling solo sets. Ace's album was almost universally applauded as the best of the four, and he had the only substantial hit of the four, with "New York Groove" (not even the best song on the album, but, I digress). On Dynasty, Ace was ready to be heard. He takes lead vocal duties on three tracks. Two of the songs were written by Ace -- "Hard Times" and "Save Your Love." "Hard Times," a reminiscence of Ace's rough early years, is okay, but not great. "Save Your Love," though, is a damn fine (and Damn bitter) break up song that still holds up thirty years later.

Ace's shining moment, and the shining moment of Dynasty for that matter, is his cover of the Rolling Stones' "2000 Man." In the Stones' capable hands, "2000 Man" was one of the few redeeming tracks on the 1967 mess Their Satanic Majesties Request. Ace (and band) turns this song onto a rock 'n' roll rager. It rocks. It kicks. Ace Frehley makes this song his own. The Stones are my favorite rock 'n' roll band, but Ace Frehley, in my opinion, OWNS this song.

I do feel that Gene and Peter are both underrepresented on Dynasty. It's not a classic album, but it's worth hearing and re-hearing. And, if you are a fan of the Space Ace, you must hear his work on here. Fans of rock, you GOTTA hear "2000 Man." It will enrich your life. Really.

Not all KISSco 5 Star Review
2009-09-10 - There are three songs from Ace on this album 2000 Man, Hard Times, and Save Your Love. That makes it worth the price. This was also Peter's last classic album. He only had one song though, Dirty Livin'.
