Editorial Review:
European version of the first single from Korn's Greatest Hits album is their cover of Cameo's 1986 single 'Word Up!'. The title track is backed with 4 non-album tracks 'Word Up! (Dante Ross Remix & Video), plus 'Another Brick In The Wall' (live in the US 2004 & video). Epic. 2004.
Word Up! Reviews:
Great cd single
2008-07-04 - This cd single is great has original version of word up, along with the remix which is mind blowing. A major must have for any and all korn fans.
A new low.
2006-01-08 - Before I start, The Curmudgeon has a LOT of time for Korn. I've been a fan for years, bought all the albums, from "Korn" and "Life Is Peachy" (both superb, epoch creating albums) to the inferior yet ultra successful "Follow The Leader", through "Issues" (again, superb) to the pretty much dire "Untouchables" (which, by this stage, they were anything but) and beyond. So, just in case anyone thinks I'm ragging on Korn for the sake of it - I'm not. Like I've said in some earlier reviews - sometimes this is no fun at all. But hey, The Irresponsible Hate Monger is here to point the finger at the worst of the worst, no matter who they are. And this time, Korn are guilty.
It's hard to work out just what exactly appeals so much to musicians about this song. "Word Up" has been covered, in less than 10 years, four times. That's pretty heavy going for a song that, let's face it, isn't that great in the first place. And believe it or not, with stiff competition from rubbish rockers Gun and BossHoss, not to mention woeful solo Spice Girl Mel B - Korn manages to be the worst cover of all.
The whole attempt just sounds tired, like Jonathon Davies knew he had to throw a few purchase incentive bonus tracks on the greatest hits record and then decided to churn this out one afternoon. The fire and fury from earlier Korn tracks is gone, replaced by the sound of a bored rich rock star trying to swell the coffers. There's no imagination, no passion - and absolutely no tune. Davies has never had the best voice in music, but here it sounds worse than ever.
Thankfully, Korn didn't give up the ghost and retire, and they look set to return with what could be their best album since "Life Is Peachy" (strong words, I know). Let's just write this cover version atrocity off as a bad idea.
Well Korn, you made The Curmudgeon's Hall Of Shame. Don't let it happen again.

Word Up!
2005-12-02 - First off, I'm not a big Korn fan. I liked their first self-titled album from 1994, but then they got more known and got more radio play, I started to not listen anymore because most of their stuff was not as good. But when my friend played "Word Up!" one day, I immediately became hooked, and was wondering if this was Korn I was hearing.
Then I learned it was a Cameo song from the 80's. Kind of odd, Korn covering an 80's dance song, so out of curiosity I downloaded the original Cameo song... and it sucked! The Korn version beats the hell out of it. To all you Cameo lovers out there, you probably hate this song but you know it's great. Now, if you are a Korn freak, then this may sound a little off, but it is still one of their best songs and an awesome cover. I guess you could take really bad 80's dance songs and make them into greatness!
As for the Dante Ross Remix, it's not the best song in the world, and after listening to the actual song it will sound horrible. But, it is still a good listen every once in a while. "Another Brick In The Wall" is another cover, this time Pink Floyd (a little better then Cameo). It sounds awesome live, as Korn hit it just right here. It is not even close to the original Pink Floyd song, but it sounds really great live. To sum it all up... buy it!
Brilliant !!
2005-01-07 - Word Up - absolutely brilliant version of this old song, great cover and Korn shown in very different light - smashing combination! Remix is a little less heavy, more mechanic - but also great. Live "Brick" is a pearl too, and check out the Word Up video - another sick idea of Korn boys!! Must see !
