Editorial Review:
The only OFFICIAL version of FLATLAND: THE MOVIE.
The movie features the voices of Martin Sheen, Michael York and Kristen Bell.
FLATLAND is an exciting half-hour animated film adapted from Edwin Abbott's classic novel, Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimension. The movie stars the voices of Martin Sheen, Kristen Bell, Tony Hale, Michael York, and Joe Estevez.
Flatland: The Movie Reviews:
far more watchable than 'the film'...
2009-11-12 - This adaptation does stray from the original book quite a bit - but it is still a great story.
I bought both versions (the movie and the film) because I thought they would both be entertaining
I laughed and was entertained by "the Movie"- and it worked great as a fun family movie too. I will be taking this one into the classroom both to motivate some discussions and to celebrate math. It will be added to the repertoire of fun math movies in my cupboard (I actually had my school buy the educational version to keep everything legit).
It is 36 minutes long - just right for class.
I was very disappointed with "the film" was over-long (by an hour), incredibly tedious (my family groaned through it) and inconsistently executed (technically).
Smart, Beautiful, and Entertaining
2009-11-12 - This movie is beautifully animated and has a talented all star cast. It can be touching, funny, and educational at the same time. It's a clever adaptation of the classic book Flatland. I loved how they came up with all the clever 2-D representations of everyday household objects like a bed and an alarm clock. They really thought this entire world through and you get sucked in to it. You get so wrapped up in the visuals, stories, and characters, that you don't realize that you are learning so much about multi-dimensional spatial relationships. Highly recommended for classrooms and home viewing for PBS lovers like me. :)
Flatland the Movie-good, but a tad cheesy;
2009-08-14 - Flatland the Movie is a stunningly animated adaptation of Abbott's 1884 novel. However, because it has been adapted for young educational audiences, many of the more intricate themes that made the original novel so potent are no longer present. This movie is a simplified, "politically correct" version with a happy ending. It is good, well presented, but because of it's changes, a tad cheesy. (I recommend that anyone who buys this version buy the other version as well, Flatland the Film, for taking so much care in developing the themes into a relevant adaptation- which I give 5/5. Please bear in mind that Flatland the Film is more of a work of art than entertainment.)
Great for the Classroom
2009-04-25 - This movie is cute and kids enjoy it. It opens up a lot of discussions about geometry in general as well as politics and religion. This movie is a must have if you teach secondary mathematics!
disappointing
2009-03-12 - This is a disappointing rendition of Abbott's classic novel. It is very professionally produced but lacking in originality, and of limited educational value. A great opportunity missed. The interviews with the actors are (unintentionally) hilarious.
