  • Editorial Review:
Peter (Jason Segel) is a struggling musician who finds his world turned upside down when his TV celebrity girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), dumps him for a tragically hip rock star. It’s the hysterically funny look at how far one man will go to forget a girl – and all the fun he finds along the way!

Description of Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Full Screen):
Breaking up is hard to do--but that doesn't mean you can't have some belly laughs about it. Forgetting Sarah Marshall provides that rare treat: a romantic comedy about breakups, that is both romantic and funny. The laughs, especially from writer-star Jason Segel, are both heartfelt and raunchy, and the film is just unexpected enough that it keeps the viewer's attention till the end. The touches of producer Judd Apatow, who's famously retooled rom-coms to appeal to guys as much as women, are woven throughout the film, but Segel's script, reportedly based on many of his own experiences, is fresh and original. And adult. Forgetting Sarah Marshall features male genitalia laffs presented in unexpected and human ways (the nude breakup scene is played for giggles but also deep poignancy), and the language and sex scenes are strictly for grownups--and rightly so. Segel's script, and his performance as Peter, show that he understands the true nature of adult relationships, which provides the refreshing difference between this film and some of Apatow's other crude creations. The cast is sublime; Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) plays title character Sarah, a self-absorbed actress, and Russell Brand is her new British honey who accompanies her to--what are the chances?--the exact same Hawaiian resort as Peter, who's nursing his broken heart. Mila Kunis plays Rachel, the resort employee who gives Peter a reason to hope, and Paul Rudd is the surfing instructor who gives him his own brand of heartfelt advice ("When life gives you lemons, just say 'F--- the lemons' and bail," he says cheerily). The pacing is screwball, and the absurdities fly (a "Dracula" musical puppet show, and a surprisingly lovely Hawaiian version of "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Nothing the viewer will forget any time soon.--A.T. Hurley

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Full Screen) Reviews:
Great "not smart" movie. 5 Star Review
2009-12-31 - Great movie. We had rented it and decided to get if for Christmas. It's not a smart movie, it's definitely a comedy, but if you're looking for something to put a smile on your face, this is it... I would say it's a movie for 18-30ish year-olds... you might think it's just plain stupid if you're older and enjoy more intelectual/drama type movies.

    4 1/2 Stars 4 Star Review
2009-12-29 - I had heard so many great things about this movie but I watched it with a skeptical mind because I had never seen any of Jason Segel's previous projects in the past (mind you, that was when this movie first came out). I laughed outloud throughout the entire film. It deals with getting over a breakup (thus the name) and it does it in a funny, smart and yet emotional way. Jason Segel has great comedic timing and his supportive cast have great chemistry to bring that out, specially Mila Kunis who was outstanding in this role. If you're a fan of Jason Segel, you probably have already watched it but if you're not (or haven't heard of him like I hadn't) I recommend this movie to you.

    Frickin Hilarious 4 Star Review
2009-12-28 - This is a hilarious movie that has a lot of great quotes in it. I think that its one of those underdog movies no one really knows about but it you want a good laugh...you should watch.

Still trying to forget 3 Star Review
2009-12-14 - Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a half and half sort of film. What's good is very good, and what's bad is pretty bad indeed. Here's what I liked:

Jason Segal as the guy who gets dumped. He was the picture of morose self pity and the story's beginning, and his performance grew more subtle as the plot progressed. Essentially, it's about a nice but shallow guy who learns from his pain to be a more self aware, emotionally connected man, and Segal demonstrated this transformation with style and grace.

Russell Brand as Aldous Snow, for whom Jason got dumped. Brand's relaxed, somewhat deadpan delivery turned his portrayal of the ultra-self-centered British rock star into brilliant parody.

Some of the humor. There are some genuinely funny moments, and the send up on today's forensic and mystical TV series is one of the best.

The supporting cast, each of whom is spot on in their eccentricities.

    What I disliked:

Sarah Marshall. Although Kristen Bell's performance cannot be faulted, Sarah is simply shallow. Apart from her appearance, there's not much there that's appealing.

The movie's pacing. Strong start, stagnating center, strong end. It left the impression that the story actually lacked a center, and the director filled the empty space with gratuitous, graphic sex scenes. LOTS of them. And they weren't especially funny. The nudity, I suppose, is supposed to help sell the movie. It's adolescent and way over done.

    Three stars. Forgettable.

Judd Apatow is a terrible writer; thank god he did not write this wonderful film! 5 Star Review
2009-12-06 - I get the people complaining about Judd Apatow. I don't get how they could hate this film simply because he produced it.

First of all, I'm not a fan of Apatow. I hated Superbad super badly (everything about that movie made me cringe; especially the not-at-all-impressive acting by nerd-typecast Michael Cera). Knocked Up was a ridiculous piece of crap--- a completely forced comedy. Step Brothers and Anchorman were awful despite the fact that I love Will Ferell. 40-Year-Old Virgin and Fun With Dick and Jane are his obviously failed attempt to attract comedy-genre lovers using big names like Steve Carrell and Jim Carrey.

With that said, I love Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It is a well-written, catchy comedy that will have you laughing the entire time. The antics of each character are well honed and I think the over-all chemistry among the male characters are the funnest to watch. Sure, some of the jokes are overly sexual but to be honest, I was more focused on how disciplined were the deliveries of punchlines. From the simple "you sound like you're from London" to the exacerbated Dracula Song--- all of it made me laugh.
