Editorial Review:
Kylie's 5th solo album from 1994 was definitely the start of the second phase of her career. From the first notes of the opener 'Confide in Me,' you know this is not the teen pop queen of old. 10 tracks.
Kylie Minogue Reviews:
Kylie Minouge
2009-12-05 - This is such an excellent CD by Kylie great to have in your collection,it sounds great all the songs are really cool, this is one of my favorites by her.
Great!
2009-07-12 - Finally, Kylie gets a chance to broaden her scope as an artist with material NOT SAW (Stock/Aitken/Waterman). You can sense her vocal chops are dealing with material that is better suited to her vocal range, which has matured by this time.
Don't expect alot of uptempo europop. What you will get is a proper mixture of styles that if you like Kylie's voice, sounds all appropriate.
The Perfect Pop Album
2005-11-16 - Kylie's move to deConstruction in 1993 showed that after cutting her pop teeth with her previous label (SAW/PWL), that Kylie yearned for a more enriching pop sound. The new label offered Kylie the best toolbox to re-invent her sound, to continue to the evolution of a pop star who's real talent had still laid untapped.
Released to the world in the fall of 1994, barring America, Kylie's fifth self-titled album heralded the continual image shift from her last record, but showed a musical sophistication she had barely hinted at during the first half of her career.
"Kylie Minogue" is a clean ten track pop record. Perfect. The mixture of classy house, pseudo-R&B, & various ballads led by an assured vocal style from Kylie is intoxicating. While her voice, still cute, girlish, yielded a more charismatic charm. From lilting highs to sensual lows, Kylie's voice showed not only improvement, but a sense of confidence gained from truly pushing herself.
The production was mostly headed up by the Brothers In Rhythm who had produced Kylie's single version of "Finer Feelings" from her 1991 album "Let's Get To It". The fruit of that colloboration worked so well, that they decided helping her move into a more mature pop sound was the thing to do. Along with songwriters Jimmy Harry, the then "it" dance group M People, with the Rapino Brothers to name a few, all gave Kylie the lyrical & musical shapes & patterns to toy with.
It is a typical pop record. It's about love. It's about heartbreak. But Kylie had never delivered these tales in such an enticing way. The record while only ten tracks, stretches time wise, but is a rewarding listen. It would require the typical pop listener a bit of time to realize some songs, since some don't immediately pay off. Built in an almost sort of "suite" fashion, ambitious house tracks such as "Where Has the Love Gone?" & "Falling" take their time, unwinding, letting the grooves work their magic.
Other highlights include the Jimmy Harry penned (specifically for Kylie ) second single "Put Yourself In My Place", Kylie's finest downtempo moment. The song recalls vintage late 1980's American R&B, but with a more atmospheric touch. "Confide In Me" the lead off single is probably one of Kylie's best single moments, the song is an urgent violin piece, but at the same time relaxed; if that makes sense.
As you can tell, this is one of my favorite Kylie albums. I HIGHLY recommend this to any pop or music fan. While it is't as hooky as "Fever" or as frenetic as it's follow-up (another favorite of mine!) "Impossible Princess", "Kylie Minogue" is a pop album every pop fan should at least experience.
Just because its kylie, doesn't mean it's "bad"
2004-03-24 - While Kylie's never released a really good album, this album contains occasional moments of brilliance! but it's not great, Confide In Me is good and a few others, but it's not spectacular. Kylie is just a pop star but I get the feeling that when she released this album she thought she was more than what she is, and this is Kylie taking herself a bit too seriously, still it's an OK album with no intention to mind boggle people.
Classy pop
2004-02-02 - Kylies move to the Deconstruction label proved to be a good move as this cd proves.
She moved away from throwaway pop, to classy pop tunes (there is a difference!).
The gorgeous Confide In Me - which is without a doubt one of her best ever singles, starts with those remarkable strings.
The beautiful Put Yourself In My place, her best ballad to date (and still in my opinion!), Where is The Feeling, Falling (written by the Pet Shop Boys) and the M-People penned track Time Will Pass You By.
My only criticism is some of the tracks are over long, and would have been best in edit form.
Classy.
