Description of Kylie Minogue - Live in Sydney:
Kylie Minogue concludes her 2001 On a Night Like This tour with an unashamed pop extravaganza on home ground in Sydney, performing to a huge audience that consists of more adults than teenagers. Kylie has undoubtedly matured over the years, too, and--apart from a brief stint believing she could become a "serious" artist--appears perfectly happy in her role as the Princess of Pop. The joy of Kylie is that she has become all things to all people, offered up in a perfectly petite package: for women it's all about adulation; the men are offered a fantasy figure; and she simultaneously manages to be a gay icon without becoming overtly camp. It's clear that the years of work as a performer have paid off--her vocals are much stronger and more professional, and to demonstrate she performs two old favorites, "I Should Be So Lucky" and "Better the Devil You Know," as serious pieces. In true showstopping style, we're offered a multitude of costume changes: from hot-pant mania to refined suits and rock-chick leather, Kylie inevitably appears looking great. --Nikki Disney
Kylie Minogue - Live in Sydney Reviews:
Kylie Minouge Live in Sydney
2009-12-05 - This is an excellent concert DVD by Kylie it's great to have in your collection if your a fan of Kylie and her style of music,it's one of my favorites.
The Greatest Work of Art. Ever.
2009-12-02 - When the Greeks held up Venus de Milo as the ideal woman, they were both bold and shortsighted. No offense Ancients, but when it comes to the ideal, Kylie Minogue has pulled ahead of Venus de Milo like a Ferrari humming past an overweight chariot!** More recent attempts at capturing beauty fare no better against Kylie's timeless gold standard. Mona Lisa? The only thing more "enigmatic" than her expression is how anyone could view her as higher than an "8" (at best) next to Kylie's unprecedented "11." Impressionists' babes look cute from afar, where Kylie looks perfect at both long and short range -- with less layers of clothes and unfrumpy hats. (Watch the whole concert on "4X Zoom" - if you can handle it - and note that Kylie is flawless). If Picasso had been lucky (lucky, lucky) enough to join Kylie in the time-space continuum, he would have dropped cubism in a quickened heartbeat and spent the rest of his life trying to fathom Kylie's perfect shape and symmetry. (A decade on the "cheeks" alone, at least, the rascal). And had Warhol been born at the right time, he surely would have done nothing but silk-screen repetitions of Kylie. Why he'd flip his wig over a modern Edie Sedgewick with looks, talent, and pure healthy speed. And the chrome profile babe on mudflaps? Close, but no cigar. (Kylie has a slightly better form, plus, as they say, "the beauty's in the details").
Alas, fate determines that only video can truly capture Kylie's full beauty. With "Live in Sydney", Kylie proves once again that she is both history's premier artist and work of art. (Imagine if Venus de Milo chiselled herself -- and was a lot hotter). The ultimate artist is at the top of her game in Sydney, during one of her most amazing periods - 2001. (Other important periods include every year since the late 80's).
The dvd starts with a 3-4 minute collage of Kylie's career-spanning video clips, like an Art History presentation for quick sexy minds. Then Kylie descends to the Love Boat stage on a giant anchor, with a grace that would bring tears of joy to Captain Stubing's eyes, and with legs that would bring blood to the groin of Isaac the funky bartender. Kylie then dances, prances, struts, ascends and descends stairs, waves, leads the audience in a Mexican wave, wiggles, etc.... in outfits that would make Austin Powers stammer! Your mojo will be working overtime! Oh, and she sings too. All live. Any inner beauty that isn't expressed by Kylie's looks is brought forth through her sweet voice.... ahhhhhhhhh she's so sweeeeet...... grrrr baby, very grrrr!
And of course, all of the above is small potatoes compared to Kylie's infectious and winning personalilty -- she's the coolest and hottest. And she just may be, according to all who have known and worked with her, the nicest person in show business and the art world. (Especially compared to Picasso, who I hear was a jerk. "Ooooh, look at me - I'm PICASSO!" Whoopdideefreakindoo). Kylie Minogue is the World's Sweetheart and Ideal. "Live in Sydney" is one of her many Great Works.
** In 1981, Kylie's media-based mentor Olivia Newton-John challenged Venus De Milo by presenting a fresh take on the Greek ideal, with "Physical" and "Totally Hot." Then in 1986, Bananarama came close to eclipsing Venus De Milo, by boldly (and convincingly) declaring "I'm your Venus, I'm your fire" in their #1 hit VENUS. Standing on the shoulders of giants, only Kylie Minogue was hot enough to leave the Greek icon in the dust. With all due respect, Kylie has passed all teachers.
On A Night Like This
2009-01-16 - For the last night of her On A Night Like This tour Kylie Minogue went home to Sydney and put one quite possibly the best recorded show of her career. From the high camp to the sultry pole dancer she managed to pull it off with grace, wit and style.
The show encompassed material from her 15 year career and she gave the audience her all. Highlights included the above mentioned version of Olivia Newton John's Physical and a more serious version of Better the Devil You Know. The costumes and the lighting were greatmaking this her most theatrical show. The vocals on this disc were much stronger than those on the more recent Showgirl DVD.
If there was any real problem it was with the camara work. At times the image shifted a little creating a stuttering effect. If this was caused by an overly used steadycam or a flaw with the lighting I can't be certain.
This is a great disc to watch as a guilty pleasure. The disc includes about 20 minutes of backstage bonus segments.
A FIVE-STAR PERFORMANCE
2008-01-01 - Kylie is a very talented singer and dancer, and she shines in this concert. Although "Live in Sydney" is not as elaborate as, say, "Showgirl", the interaction she has with her audience in this one is awesome: she commands the stage. Her performance of Olivia Newton John's "Physical" alone is worth the price of this DVD. Five stars.
Kylie Minogue - Live in Sydney
2007-04-11 - This is a pretty good concert, but not in the same league as Fever 2002.
Well worth owning though, especially to see how much Kylie grew as a performer between this tour and the Fever tour.
Very Good.
