Editorial Review:
Rod Steiger stars as Ben Kallin, an evangelical vigilante with his own private death row and electric chair in this horror flick with a sense of humor. Convinced that he's on a mission from God, Kallin executes those who slip through the system unscathed.
Guilty as Charged Reviews:
BEST CULT FILM OF THE EARLY 90's
2005-03-07 - I saw this film during it's brief(one week) run in seattle in 1992 and i've watched it countless times since then on VHS and i'm so glad to see its available on DVD. This is one funny, funny dark comedy; Rod steiger gives a great performance as a religious nut who has taken it upon himself to capture escaped, pardoned or paroled murderers and holding them in his private dungeon under his meatpacking plant until they see the errors of their ways and then putting them to death in his homemade electric chair. this film spares no one: right wing death penalty advocates, left-wingers, bleeding heart liberals, politicians, police and criminals. that's what i loved about it: it skewers EVERYONE and it's very controlled and actually sort-of subtle! it has a great score, a great cast(wait until you see Issac Hayes as the demented preacher/assistant to Steiger!)and absolutely fantastic sets and cinematography. And Rod Steiger, who always committed 100% of himself to every role, no matter how small the budget or strange the screenplay, should have been nominated for some sort of award because he really gives a magnificent performance here. He somehow manages to make his character funny, sad, sweet, righteous, warped and malevolent-- sometimes all in one scene! This film deserves to be played at art houses every Midnight on weekends! Enough with Rocky Horror! let's have a new CULT FILM FAVORITE!
what tha????
2003-10-01 - This has got to be, hands down, one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story of a vigilante who has erected his own electric chair to deal with "soft on crime" policies after his family is slaughtered by an early parolee. Terribly acted, terribly shot. This movie is straight up crap. I started watching it out of camp value, issac hayes, lauren hutton, heather graham...I bet all parties involved wish this poo-bomb would crawl back to the depths of hell from which it was spawned. I saw that used copies were being sold as low as 43cents...this is way too much. You should be paid to take this off of someone. I don't know what kind of compensation would be worth the cost on your humanity. Please, for your own sake! Heinous!!! You have been warned.
I saw it SOLELY for Heather Graham
2002-07-03 - While this film is definitely in the "WEIRD" category, I can't call it a bad film. It is definitely low-budget, and one that 98% of the population has never heard of.
The camerawork in this film is awesome; lots of dutch angles, high/low angles, etc. which work well for the story.
The story itself is interesting, a self-appointed vigilante who runs his own death row after hours in a meat plant.
If it hadn't had Heather in it, I probably would've never seen it.
