Description of School Daze:
Spike Lee's follow-up to his unlikely hit She's Gotta Have It was this ambitious--some would say too ambitious--attempt at a musical about college life. But Lee, ever the provocateur, doesn't settle for a simple college comedy. Rather, he wants to make a point about the social divisions within all-black colleges: between the socializers and the socially conscious, and between light and dark-skinned blacks. Laurence Fishburne plays a politically aware student trying to bring his fellow students together; Giancarlo Esposito plays the fraternity boss who constantly seeks to insert a wedge between the haves and have-nots. Lee himself plays a pawn in the middle, a would-be frat boy undergoing a wicked Hell Week as a pledge. The story doesn't pull together and the musical numbers--more spoof than anything else--only serve to fragment it. While it offers interesting points, it never does so in a particularly cohesive way. --Marshall Fine
School Daze Reviews:
School Daze
2009-10-05 - Good movie, but sad portrayal of how color struck students acted in college life: Light-skinned blacks vs. Dark-skinned blacks, greed, status, etc. Besides, it doesn't matter what race, color, creed, religion, etc. that we are because God created all of us! We are ALL BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!!!!! God Bless Everybody!!!
ALL because of this movie, I couldn't wait to go to college!
2009-09-11 - If anyone wants to know what the "Black College Experience" was like, all they have to do is watch this movie. I was 10 when this movie came out and couldn't wait to turn 18 to go to college and experience what I saw from the movie. From the frats, to the many parties, to the "psuedo-Black Nationalists" protesting various causes on campus, to the step shows, etc. I was excited to go see the movie with my older cousins who attended HBCUs. I ended up going to a PWI, but was still able to gain the full "Black College Experience" b/c an HBCU was within walking distance of my school. I have some wonderful memories (that I will probably only share with my grandchildren, lol), This is a must have movie to put in your collection to enjoy on a Saturday with your old college buddies while walking down memory lane about your old "innocent" college days!
GAMMA BABY! GAMMA!

School Daze (Special Edition)
2009-02-17 - The special edition video has the sound track included. School Daze is one of my husband's favorite movies. When i got it for him & he saw the sound track was attached, he was so happy. It was like a kid in the candy store. The movie summarizes that the world shouldn't/doesn't revolve around any particular group(Race), everyone should have their eyes open. We are a humane society & everyone no matter what their back ground has something to offer. It's a must see!!
