  • Editorial Review:
Steven Spielberg, proving he's one of the few modern filmmakers who has the visual fluency to be capable of making a great silent film, took a melodramatic, D.W. Griffith-inspired approach to filming Alice Walker's novel. His tactics made the film controversial, but also a popular hit. You can argue with the appropriateness of Spielberg's decision, but his astonishing facility with images is undeniable--from the exhilarating and eye-popping opening shots of children playing in paradisiacal purple fields to the way he conveys the brutality of a rape by showing hanging leather belts banging against the head of the shaking bed. In a way it's a shame that Whoopi Goldberg, a stage monologist who made her screen debut in this movie, went on to become so famous, because it was, in part, her unfamiliarity that made her understated performance as Celie so effective. (This may be the first and last time that the adjective understated can be applied to Goldberg.) Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and actress (supporting players Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were also nominated), it was quite a scandal--and a crushing blow to Spielberg--when it won none. --Jim Emerson

    "HEARTFELT EMOTION" 5 Star Review
2009-11-18 - "The Color Purple" is a film that tugs at your heart strings. Extremely emotional, the film received 11 Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture of 1985, and is widely considered the best film to document African/American issues. Taking place in the South, "The Color Purple" features the character of Celie, played brilliantly by Whoopie Goldberg in her screen debut, a woman being battered by her husband, the norm for black woman in the poor deep U.S. south in the early 1900's. Two woman eventually become close friends with Celie, giving her strength and power to overcome her abusive husband and to get on with her life. One of those friends is played by Oprah Winfrey (in an Osacr nominated performance) who plays Sophie. The role was actually offered to Tina Turner who turned down director Steven Spielberg's offer citing, "I already lived that life". The movie has an outstanding supporting cast including Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, and Adolph Caesar. Interviews with the cast are included with the DVD and much more. A perfect film that will remain in your memory forever.

Put Race Relations aside! 5 Star Review
2009-10-13 - This Movie has a powerful view and impact on certain issues that arose in the time it was set. But it is a based on a work of fiction. Therefore I am pretty sure it has a message to send across just like many if not all movies...besides "Die Hard."

So even if you hate "chick flicks" and have some issue with certain views.
I think the awards can speak from themselves.

You don't get nominated for 11 Oscars everyday.

    OUTSTANDING ! 5 Star Review
2009-09-08 - One of the best movies I have ever seen. I think more awards should have been given to the cast of this movie than were given at the time. Every scene throughout this story is amazing !!! One to see for sure !...................................thenk you.
