Editorial Review:
Based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple is a richly-textured, powerful film set in America's rural south. Whoopi Goldberg, winner of the Best Actress Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination, makes a triumphant screen debut as the radiant, indomitable Celie, the story's central character. Her impressive portrayal is complimented by a distinguished cast that includes Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery, Adolph Caesar, Rae Dawn Chong and Akosua Busia. The Color Purple marks a new, more mature color in Spielberg's artistic palette. It is an exquisitely crafted, landmark film that will be treasured and talked about for years to come.
The Color Purple Reviews:

God is trying to tell you something
2009-10-12 - I absolutely love this movie. It's one that you have to watch with an open mind and heart to be able to catch all of the lessons its trying to teach. I think God does get a tad bit upset when people take his blessings and gifts for granted. It also tries to tell us that in life, despite appearances, everyone is looking for something, and no one has it all. Most important is the fact that in everything that going on in these times, God is definitely trying to tell us something
Lovely Rendition of the Famous Novel
2009-09-27 - The Color Purple / B000P0J092
If you read and enjoyed Walker's The Color Purple, then you will most likely love this movie - this is possibly one of the most faithful book films I have ever seen.
There's very little praise I could heap onto this movie that I haven't already heaped onto the novel, but as far as movie-only elements go, I should note how wonderful the acting in this movie is. Having really only sampled Whoopi Goldberg as a comedian, I was blown away at how well she portrayed Celie, especially as she matures emotionally from a frightened little girl to a abused and distant wife and finally to a strong and confident woman. The relationship between Celie and Shug is beautifully portrayed, and is extremely nuanced as each woman aids the other in their spiritual and emotional growth. Glover, too, acts wonderfully here, and it is fascinating to see his character evolve as well (a feature of the novel that could have easily been swept aside in the Hollywood desire for a completely irredeemable villain) from a cruel, emotionally dead man to one who regrets the things he has done and the opportunities he has lost.
I would greatly recommend this movie to anyone, but I would also recommend that you read the novel first if you haven't already. Because the novel covers such a long period of time (most of Celie's life, really), it was necessary for the movie to cut many events, and while it did so in the best possible way, there's still a lot of material worth reading in the novel that will help to understand the movie and why the characters feel and act the way they do.
Color Purple
2009-04-17 - Color Purple is one of my favorite movies. I'd owned it on video and decided to purchase the DVD. I didn't know that it would have a side "A" and "B" but that's fine. I've always loved this movie and have gained even more appreciation for it over the years.
