Description of Possession:
Modern love and classic romantic passion meet in this lush adaptation of A.S. Byatt's brilliant novel. Academics Roland Michell (Aaron Eckhart) and Maud Bailey (Gwyneth Paltrow) are experts on the work of two different Victorian poets. As they pursue a possible connection between their subjects, the two sleuths begin to stumble toward a romance of their own. Though it necessarily loses some of the depth of Byatt's original, Possession is a worthy adaptation, faithful to the book in both story and spirit. Director Neil LaBute uses clever and visually elegant methods of switching back and forth between time periods, subtly contrasting the prickly moderns and the swoony Victorians without making either pair seem unappealing. The movie also does an excellent job of capturing the exhilaration (and the politics) of intellectual discovery, and feels truly romantic without ever getting icky. Though Paltrow and Eckhart both succeed as the modern leads, the real standouts are Jeremy Northam as Randolph Henry Ash and Jennifer Ehle as Christabel LaMotte. Their passion gives the movie its romantic core and makes the whole search worthwhile. --Ali Davis

Lovers, Poets, and Academics 
2009-10-03 - A cute movie, something along the lines of a Shakespeare in Love meets The Da Vinci Code. The movie follows two academics as they hunt down tantalizing clues about a 19th century poet's extramarital love affair. While it is clear from the beginning that they the poet did have an affair, the movie throws in a few twists and turns. United in their quest, Aaron Eckhart and Paltrow's characters inevitably fall in love.
The movie has a nice rhythm to it. It never really throws up any major surprises, but the storyline is original enough that it remains entertaining. Both Paltrow and Eckhart act pretty well in this film, so it's pretty easy to sympathize them along as they become obsessed with the dead poet's love letters. Overall, a great date film.

More gripping than I thoght it would be
2009-02-15 - This tale about a pair of scholars researching the possible love affair of a beloved poet was much more interesting than I thought it could possibly be. Characterization was great: Paltrow and her hero had great chemistry even though both were supposedly disfunctional at love. Very beautifully lensed.
AN ELEGANTLY STYLISH ROMANCE
2008-12-06 - POSSESSION is a wonderful blending of the joy of discovery, sweeping romance, and subtle mystery. Jeremy Northram and Jennifer Ehle are brilliant as the two star-crossed Victorian, poets. Their love story is discovered by two present-day researchers ( Gwyneth Paltrow, and Aaron Eckhart ), and as they uncover more about the Victorians, and are steadily drawn into the world of the poets, and their exquisitely, understated passion, they in turn, begin to fall in love.
This could have been a truly saccharine mess, but instead is almost as lush, and rewarding as a poem by Keats. Neil LaBute's direction is sure, the settings resonate with color, and the costuming is superb.
Captivating movie
2008-09-14 - I just want to say that I agree with most of the reviewers here that it is a brilliant movie with equally brilliant actors. Captivating from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
