Editorial Review:
MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS: HIP POP features highly memorable performances such as Britney’s snake charming in "I’m A Slave For U" (in 2001), Nelly’s "Country Grammar" (in 2000) and Shakira’s barefoot belly dancing in "Objection Tango" (in 2002), performances that had everyone glued to their television sets! Also included are "Tha Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony in 1996, "Hip Hop Hooray" by Naughty By Natue in 1993, "U Can’t Touch This" by MC Hammer in 1990, "Jump, Jive An’Wail" by the Brian Setzer Orchestra in 1998, "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai in 1997 and "Mas" by Kinky at the 2002 Latin VMA’s.
Description of MTV Video Music Awards - Rock:
A variety of rock & rollers take center stage on this 40-minute compilation of performances (plus about 10 minutes' worth of comedic monologues) culled from MTV's Video Music Awards telecasts. Of course, some may argue that the likes of Jewel (who plays solo) and Pink don't exactly qualify as rock artists, but there are plenty of genuine rockers here. And even if they wear their influences on the sleeves, people like Lenny Kravitz (with the neo-Hendrixisms of "Are You Gonna Go My Way"), Silverchair (the Nirvana soundalike "Tomorrow"), and INXS (with the late Michael Hutchence coming on like Jim Morrison) put on a good show--as do the predictably outrageous Marilyn Manson (who's preceded onstage by a marching band), the loud bratty, and fun Blink 182 (appearing with a chorus line of midgets), and the always-reliable U2 ("Please," from 1997). Nothing amazing here, but entertaining nonetheless. --Sam Graham
MTV Video Music Awards - Rock Reviews:
Ok DVD, could have had a better line-up
2007-03-06 - I bought this DVD just for the Silverchair performance of "Tomorrow". The only other one I really enjoyed was STP's "Pretty Penny". I don't care too much for Blink 182, the Vines performance was horrid, and while it was good, I don't see why Pink was included on the disc. It gets 4 stars just for having Silverchair......
No Axl Rose?
2004-06-16 - One of the best performances was when Axl Rose and Tom Petty sang Free Fallin'.
I also agree that is missing the Pearl Jam-Neil Young performance of Rockin' in the Free World
No Pearl Jam!!!!
2003-07-21 - Why is "Rockin' in the Free World" performed by Pearl Jam w/ Neil Young not on the DVD! That's one of the most memorable MTV moments I can think of. Why is Pink on here? She's not rock!!! It's also ashamed that there is no Linkin Park. Their "One Step Closer" performance was awesome. Hopefully in the future there will be a Vol. 2 of this collection of MTV VMA performances. Blink 182 and Lenny Kravitz are definetly highlights to the DVD.
There were great performances by Silverchair and U2 as well.
