Editorial Review:
Where has Leonard Cohen been for the past nine years? The legendary songwriter's mostly been in a Zen monastery, it turns out, obsessively rewriting and polishing the oblique, lapidary lyrics for this austere collection. Ten New Songs is arguably Sharon Robinson's record as much as Cohen's--she cowrote all the songs, plays most of the instruments (primarily a synth that seems to have freshly emerged from a chintzy 1984 power ballad), and accompanies Cohen's gloomy croak with her own crooning. This is the most subdued album Cohen's ever made, which is saying something. It's as if he no longer has time for anything in music or performance that could alter the meaning and force of his words. --Douglas Wolk

Ten New Songs Reviews:
Boring 1 Star Review
2009-11-14 - I was disappointed--felt like every song sounded the same & the cd is a bit depressing overall. Taken individually there are some great lyrics & some interesting music. This seems like a cd for shuffle mode, not one for a long car ride!

Leonard Cohen - 10 new songs of pure musical pleasure 5 Star Review
2009-09-08 - This had got to be one of his best work ever. Arrangements are elegant and the whole is extremely rich (which mean you can listen to it for years and still discover new nuances). A masterpiece IMO.

... Existential Lounge Lizard 5 Star Review
2009-08-28 - Can a recording be both philosophical and sexy? The answer is yes - and "Ten New Songs" is both. I resisted getting this for a while, but, unlike many recordings that heavily rely on synthesizers, I found this one to work unbelievably well. Cohen and Sharon Robinson are a winning and surprizingly sultry combination. Her voice and accompaniment, along with the production, perfectly compliment "The Master's Song". His words are both powerful and minimal but evoke a detached enlightenment and ironic romanticism that Cohen has continued to refine over the years. His voice is like a tuning fork that immediately sets one's brain waves to deep alpha. She is the feminine counterpart to his ancient, sacred beast. This material gets better and better and reveals more with each listening. A word should also be given to the engineering and mixing - the word is "superb".

Ten New Songs 5 Star Review
2009-08-21 - Great CD, My old one got stuck in my car CD exchanger and I liked it so much I bought it again. Very Sexy !

Ten New Songs 5 Star Review
2009-06-26 - Boogie Street and Alexandra Leaving are especially haunting, but I love the whole album. You might think to skip it because it is not a solo album, it's a collaboration with Sharon Robinson. Don't skip it. It's great.
