Editorial Review: Movie DVD Men in Black Reviews: It's a bug-a-boo 2009-11-05 - People go through life oblivious to the reality around them. As pointed out in this movie, at one time everyone knew the world was flat; and now everyone knows we are alone in the universe. But what if we are wrong? Who will protect us? "Men in black used to be the term for the bad guys. This movie shows they are our last line of defense. This is a fun movie and there are many great actors to add to the fun.
Every one is so busy watching Tommy Lee Jones make his stoic looks and Will making one-liners that they miss the person that hold it all together. In addition, that person has to do act throughout the movie in an Edgar suit. Have you ever tried one on? Vincent D'Onofrio has to look unnatural and act natural. This was one movie where I felt sorry for the bug. He even drops his snack (Linda Fiorentino) near the end. It just shows that bugs lead a hard life.
If you are into recent bug movies, look for "Out There" where they mention bugs in a rug

It's worth it. If you're strong enough. 2009-08-16 - The disc- is better I expected; a full-screen version AND a wide-screen version on the same disc. [There is only ONE disc] I wish more studios would stop being greedy and just include both versions. And I'd give the movie 5-stars, but I'm only giving 'this' DVD 4 stars. Why: The disc doesn't go with its case. I say this because: The disc menu references extras that, upon selection, refer you to "DISC 2". The disc has "DISC 1" in the silkscreen artwork. The disc was new/unopened- complete with all those accursed stickers around the case edge. If all you want is the movie, you'll be happy with this disc. FS/WS versions and some extras. The MST3K-style commentary with Tommy Lee & the director; is disappointing. And the extras I would have liked- 'making of' 'special effects' are on 'DISC 2', which the manufacturer obviously decided they would rather throw away than simply give to me in what is obviously a re-branded, lower-cost edition.
The best of the best of the best 2009-06-02 - Triple "A" comedy with no slow moments. A little sexy for younger audiences but most of the "sexy" humor will be lost on the kids. A great way to while away an evening with popcorn.
men in black 2 2009-05-08 - ay movie with tommy lee jones, and especially will smith, is destined to be a pretty good movie
Legitimately entertaining all these years later 2009-04-17 - The sci fi genre hasn't been too kind to us humans. Our cities have been torched by alien spaceships or death rays, stomped on by monsters, flooded, frozen, flooded and frozen, attacked by ancient demons, subjected to diseases that turned many residents into zombies...you get the picture. Global destruction has been threatened - and narrowly averted - many a time as well. Chalk it up to boredom and/or appreciation for the vivid imagination of certain members of the directorial community, but audiences flock to see fictional representations of themselves menaced by all sorts of threats. Honestly, and I say this with the knowledge that I have been one of these audience members more times than I can count, it can get a little old.
When this movie came along there wasn't a whole lot like it out there in the sci fi canon. The closest thing was Ghostbusters, a classic 80s comedy that set the tone for future cinematic ventures into the realm of tongue-in-cheek sci fi/supernatural humor. MiB takes the same happy-go-lucky comedic formula one step further, imagining a world where aliens walk among us disguised as "regular" (or irregular as the case may be) people. The possibilities with this concept were/are virtually limitless, and the film does a good job exploring them while reining in any tendencies to stray too far from the plotline. It can be a tad formulaic at times but the originality and creativity that is evident outweighs the film's obvious flaws.
The sci fi genre needs Spaceballs, Ghostbusters and MiB just as much as it needs The Day The Earth Stood Still, the Star Trek movies or Independence Day. None of it should be taken too seriously, but at least with this film and its thematic kindred, you probably won't be the only person in the theater chuckling at what's happening onscreen.
