Description of Minutes to Midnight:
Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Like its predecessors Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteroa (2003), Minutes to Midnight flexes plenty of decibel-heavy muscle ("Given Up," "Bleed It Out," "No More Sorrow") and made-to-order, melodic radio fare ("Leave Out All the Rest," "Shadow of the Day," "In Pieces"). But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High." On past efforts, the combination of breezy keyboard, arpeggiated guitar, choral vocals, and a military snare-beat would yield another slab of smarm, here MC Mike Shinoda drops the two best verses of his career, blending vocal styles with singer Chester Bennington for a moving piece that's as welcome a repertorial addition as Linkin Park is ever likely to muster. --Jason Kirk
Minutes to Midnight Reviews:
Wearing Out My Copy
2009-11-08 - I can't say I fall into the "die-hard" Linkin Park fan group, so this CD didn't offend me as it seems to have inexplicably offended some others. For a long time now I couldn't figure out why I found myself repeatedly being drawn to this band's sound. In all other cases I positively detest rap in any form, and yet with Linkin Park I make an exception. This CD made me realize why: Behind almost everything they do, there's a powerful lyrical quality to their music. This album brings out that lyricism and highlights it more than their previous releases. Yes, on a whole it's somewhat "ballady", but it's done so well and I don't feel like the album drags or anything because of it. I really want to laugh sometimes at the squeamishness of some guys when faced with their favorite band doing "too many ballads". Suck it up.
To keep it short and sweet, there's been only a couple dozen CDs in my lifetime I've bought that didn't constantly make me have to skip over songs (and made me feel like I wasted a bunch of money for just a couple good picks). I enjoy this CD all the way through, with the only skipping being to go back and listen to the previous tune again. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but giving this only 1 or 2 stars is nuts.
Continuity Album : maturing album
2009-11-01 - i would say looking at my previous collection of Linkin, i am somewhat a fan. However i lost touch with them till this album came around. I must say these guys have matured up as artist over the years. This era of an album reminds me so much of U2's Joshua tree from the 80's. It has heart and you feel there is good continuity between all tracks! Not to mention several of their tracks got picked up by movie scores. I think they will continue to grow.
Umm yaaaa NO!
2009-10-30 - If you like whining chick rock, like the new Staind and Daughtry, you'll love this album. If you like Linkin Park, don't pick up this Linkin Park CD (odd sounding eh?). WTF LP! My only hope for your 4th CD is that the song "New Divide" is the LP I've grown to love. If you're headed back in that "rock" direction let me know, otherwise I'm done with you.
i dig it
2009-09-20 - bought it for 'given up' raw for lp. kinda liked the other tracks, no suprise, well crafted tunes.
A rare Rick Rubin miss...
2009-08-28 - Rick Rubin usually has the golden touch - from the Beastie Boys to the Dixie Chicks, to Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond. But this CD has so many sugar coated power ballads you'd think you just bought a Nickelback CD.
There are a few rockers but not enough to offset the bad.
Bad Rick Rubin. Bad.
