Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music, flexing both plenty of decibel-heavy muscle and slabs of made-to-order, melodic radio fare. But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High," on which MC Mike Shinoda drops the two best verses of his career. As major labels undergo digital growing pains, the MVI (Music Video Interactive) format of Minutes to Midnight makes a valiant attempt to raise the stakes of value-added product, packaging videos ("What I've Done" and two "making of" featurettes), lyrics, liner notes, ringtones, a photo gallery, icons, wallpaper, fan club info, and "fine art" onto one DVD. The additional toolkit and widget links registered users to more online content, including further downloads, the band's message board, an easily navigable store stocked with other Linkin Park music and swag, and more. As far as we can tell, the MVI does not install anything. Much of the content undergoes some skipping on all but the newest computers, but despite a few kinks, MVI is clearly not your father's MP3. --Jason Kirk

Best Rock album this year 
2007-12-18 - I bought this album the day it came out twice. I wanted to listen to it for a couple of months before I actually reviewed it. And I have to say that this album is amazing. Linkin Park's change in sound was a brilliant idea, the album starts off with wake, an instrumental that perfectly matches the atmosphere of the name of the album, it gives the feeling of something dark. Given up starts off with a guitar and a track of keys jingling and hands clapping, it has a very punk rock sound to it. The second track(Leave Out All The Rest) starts off with sampling, and has a very deep emotional meaning, it sounds very different from what Linkin Park has done before. Bleed it Out sounds very much like the old Linkin Park, Mike raps the verses, Chester screams the chorus, and for this reason, is probably the worst song on the album. Shadow of The Day is extremely different from other Linkin Park songs, but is, in my opinion, similar to the second track. What I've done is in ways similar and different to Linkin Parks old sound, it has a strong meaning, but the emotion isn't very strong, and its piano pattern at the beginning matches the atmosphere of wake. Hands Held High is possibly the best track on the album, it starts off with an organ, then a marching band type drum pattern, the verses are rapped by Mike and are full of emotion, the simple chorus of "amen" adds to the emotional effect of the song. No More Sorrow is Very much like What I've Done, it is different in the fact that its structure is different, there is more emotion in this track, but still not alot. Valentine's Day is very different sounding from their old sound, it has the same structure as Hands Held High and is full of emotoin. In between has Mike singing along to a bass, it is one of the more unique songs on the album, it's dry, repetitive lyrics do not keep it from being a truly amazing song. In pieces is a very different song, It manages to combine the anger of Linkin Park's old sound with a great amount of emotion, it also contains a simple, yet amazing guitar solo. The Little Things Give You Away is one of the best song Linkin Park has ever written it combines the best elements of the songs on the album, a guitar solo, a repeating chorus at the end, and a beat loop at the beginning, along with a soft sound throughout. Yes, some songs are paired together, it was hard to rank some of these.
here is how i ranked the songs: 1:Hands Held High, 2:The Little Things Give you away, 3:Leave Out all the Rest, Valentine's Day, 4:In Pieces, In between, 5:Given Up, wake, 6: What I've Done, No More Sorrow, 7: Bleed it Out, Shadow Of The Day. If you want to hear the best of LInkin Park, then buy this album, the only other songs that truly stand out by them do not compare to the amazing emotion and sound brought on by this album, Linkin Park has finally made a record that I want to listen to the whole way through for more than a month. This album is easily my favorite in my cd collection.
Amazing, just Amazing
2007-06-14 - This is just an Amazing Record, of one of the greatest bands ever, this special edition is excellent, the package and the dvd is worth the money. The package looks like a book and have some great art, the DVD is great, the video and the documentaries are great, and so is the extra stuff, i never found the screensaver tough...

Linkin Park [still] Rocks!
2007-06-12 - I'd read numerous reviews before Minutes to Midnight's release that scared me to death with statements like "the new CD was the worst ever, didn't sound like Linkin Park, the new producer ruined them," blah, blah, blah. Man, I don't know where those people got their information because I've had this CD in my player for nearly a month now and I still cannot bring myself to skip any song. Honestly, I enjoy them all.
I've told everyone I know to go out and buy this album--even the people that aren't into Linkin Park. I know this CD is going to gain LP a lot of new fans. There's something for everyone--from hardcore (Given Up) to low key (Shadow of the Day) to kind of punk/80s (Bleed It Out). I must admit there are a few songs that break LP's self-made mold (check out In Between - Mike's vocal and the lyrics blew me away), but they've only improved in my opinion. That's what true artists do though--they continue to grow and look for new ways to express themselves.
The one thing I'm most happy about is the fact that their lyrics are as strong as ever. After listening to how wicked these guys sounded when Hybrid Theory first came out (I can still remember listening to The Blitz and hearing Chester's roar on One Step Closer for the first time), the lyrics are what really hooked me. All the lyrics seem tailored to my life--any mood I'm in, there's a LP song that speaks to my heart and expresses my soul. So, thank you guys for putting out another great album. I don't know how y'all do it, but I can't wait for the next one!
P.S. By the way, this special edition, or whatever you wanna call it, is pretty freakin' awesome. I had no idea when I pre-ordered it how cool it was gonna look. It's about the size of a book, with printed lyrics and tidbits of background info on each song, artwork and more. I'm totally stoked I spent the few extra bucks for this one instead of the plain one, but hey, if you can't afford the one with all the frills, show your support anyway by purchasing the plain jane version. Either way, all the great songs are on there. Oh, be sure to listen to Leave Out All the Rest, too. It's my favorite off this album.
