Linkin Park - Breaking the Habit Reviews:
Easily my favorite Linkin Park music video.
2009-03-29 - If ever there was a music video good enough to deserve an entire DVD and manga book focused on it, it would be Linkin Park's 'Breaking The Habit', directed by Joe Hahn and animated Japanese-style by a team of well-known animators. The song itself is amazing. It started out as an instrumental (which can be heard on the DVD menu), but later had lyrics written for it. Unlike most of LP's songs, it contains strictly singing and no rapping, and while there are guitars there are also live strings and piano. The song is about the struggle to break a bad habit or solve a problem, such as drug abuse, unplanned pregnancy, and adultery, all of which are depicted in the video, but not too graphically. Lead singer Chester Bennington's spirit sees people 'committing acts of loneliness, hopelessness, and abuse' (as described in the book), after committing suicide by jumping off an apartment building. But about half-way through the video, time begins to move backward, and he returns to the rooftop where the band was performing, leaving it up to you to decide if 'breaking the habit' refers to suicide. All of this is explained in the book, which also includes an introduction written by the band, hand-written lyrics by Mike Shinoda, storyboards used during the making of the video, behind-the-scenes photos, band member profiles, and random trivia facts called 'Tokyopop-ups'. The DVD also features the making of the music video and some sort of in-studio performance of the song. Because of the fact that the song and video's subject matter is easy to relate to, you don't have to be a huge Linkin Park fan to enjoy this. Therefore, I highly recommend this book-and-DVD package.
